Clicking Fan turning on, plus codes 35, 51

Post by trevorno »

I just resurrected a 94 SS 5mt from sitting for 9 years. It is now running. When I turn the ignition key on prior to start, I hear a persistent clicking that seems to be coming from the center back part of the engine bay. When I turn the car off, it also continues to click for several seconds. Also the fan comes on and seems to surge. Looking at the check engine light, it's coding 35 and 51. The temperature gauge is not working either. I'm guessing coolant temp sensor, but what do I know??? Thanks for the help.

I'd check to make sure the green diagnostic connectors are NOT connected.

Code 35 is the canister purge solenoid, and 51 is either the neutral switch or inhibitor switch. I'd suggest replacing the canister purge solenoid, clear the codes and then see what comes back using the black connectors only.

Regarding the temp gauge, there are actually two temp sensors, the main two wire one for the ECU and a small one wire sensor for the gauge. You can try replacing that one wire temp sensor.

You can see the two sensors in these pictures

So I replaced the solenoid and unplugged the green connecter. No more CELs. I do have a persistent tick after it warms up. Sounds more substantial than hla's. I'll make a video and post it for evaluation. Thanks for the help.
