So I pulled my NA 2.2 last night
It was easier to do this than pull the tranny (with no hoist) in replacing the clutch. I am going to replace my oil pan gasket which is seeping. In the back of the motor, there is a plastic circular seal of some sort which is also seeping and what looks to be a metal plate cover on the other side of the crank that is seeping. What are these? Do I replace? Anything else I should look at? Change ? while the motor is out. Timing belt kit done within the past 20k. thanks
Re: So I pulled my NA 2.2 last night
The driver's side rear head has a cam cover/plug. These typically don't go bad, but if it's seeping, it should be replaced. The passenger side rear head has a metal plate that bolts on and there is an o-ring you should replace. If you have the plastic separator plate you should replace that and put a new metal one in. You'll need to remove the flywheel to get at this. Also, inspect the rear crank seal. If it looks good, you may not want to mess with it. If it's leaking, replace it. I mention you may not want to mess with it because it can be a pain to replace.
How many miles on the motor and what year?

No gasket on the oil pan, just good silicone. The circular seal, is it the rear main? could be a service hole cover that has o-ring. The big metal plate is the oil separator cover no gasket, just silicone. I would change rear main if it's leaking.

You can see the plug in the right side of the picture since the engine is upside down.

Re: So I pulled my NA 2.2 last night
Its a 94L with 116k on it. The circular seal is the one in Josh's pic. Separater plate=Big plastic plate behind the flywheel? What does it do?
Re: So I pulled my NA 2.2 last night
The plate covers a PCV passage and there is also a plug behind there for piston pin removal. Its sealed with sylicone but if yours is plastic then you need to get the updated metal one cuz the plastic ones never seal right, notice the updated cover in Josh's photo. The big brown seal in the center of Josh's pic is the rear crank seal, the black plug on the cylinder head is for camshaft removal, replace them if their leaking, I just use a big ass socket to instal the cam plug, the crank seal is a bit more difficult though, I'm not sure what people around here use. I have access to an OEM installer but I doubt thats feasible for you, do you have access to large PVC pipe?

I use the old seal to install the new one....while it's not the best way, it does work.....but is still a pain in the butt.

I attempted to install my rear main seal. It pushed past the face of the back of the engine, so it sits a few millimeters down inside the gap there. Is this a problem? I don't think I'll be able to remove it without ruining the seal.

If its in too far oil will leak past the seal. It is a PITA to get out and I don't think there's a way to remove it without destroying it.trevorno wrote:I attempted to install my rear main seal. Yup. Might as well get a new one and make sure it's in right. Be such a painting reinstall the motor only to find out its puking oil.
Re: So I pulled my NA 2.2 last night
Yeah....I ended up having to pull the new seal because it went in too far. There's no way to get it out without boogering it up. Best just to get a new seal and reinstall. It sucks, but it's much better in the long run.
