Got new speakers for Christmas, need advice with install.

Post by tsbpenguin »

Hello all,
For x-mas my dad got me a pair of Sony Xplod XS-R1644 6.5" 4-way speakers. They are rated at 270w peak, and 50w RMS @ 4 ohms. I also had an amp laying around from one of my old flip cars. It is a Rockford Fosgate punch 160. It's a 2 channel rated at 2 x 80 watts rms @ 2 ohms, or 2 x 40 watts rms @ 4 ohms. I'm not new to hooking up sound systems, but I've never seriously researched all the technicalities. I'm still just not 100% clear on how to set everything up to run at the proper resistance. Trying to figure out if I need to wire the speakers up in series, or parallel. Also I'm assuming I'd want to set the crossover to high pass filter? Thanks in advance.

I would recommend just running each channel of the amp to one speaker, i.e left to left, right to right.

If I'm reading the info you posted correctly, the speakers are rated for 50w RMS @ 4 ohms, and the amp is rated for 40W RMS @ 4ohms. So you'll be good. Fosgate amps tend to be under rated, so that amp will likely put out more power than the rated 40W, which is fine. You'll just need to adjust and play with the amp gain.

I'm assuming you're using these speakers in the front doors? Do you have a separate sub? If so, I'd set the filter on the amp to high pass.

If you have any more questions, just ask.

Correct, they're going in the front. No sub yet, but I'll be doing sub & amp set soon, may or may not do rear speakers at the same time. Would I be safe running the crossover in full mode until I get a sub, or should I play it safe and stick with the HPF? Thanks again!

Yeah, you can run the crossover in full mode. Just don't get too crazy with the volume. Once you start hearing audible distortion, you need to turn it down.
