BJ Wagon - no power to wheels

Post by archerw »

First post, just picked up a wagon from impound. It was towed at some point but don't know how. Driveshaft still there. Runs good, clutch feels normal, but wheels don't go 'round.

Wouldn't think a clutch would fail like this but that's what i'm thinking at the moment. Any ideas?

So it shifts good? Broken shaft?

Seems like it shifts freely. In fact, I can hear the engine unload a bit as I come off the peda in every gearl. Even if I had diff or shaft problems, my transaxles should still turn, right? Not really familiar with how the AWD works so not a very good troubleshooter in that department. Thanks for the replies!

*Was planning on pulling wheels to get tires so all 4 wheels are in the air.

There's no rotational noise when the car is running and in gear (car lifted). That makes me think the problem lies in the clutch rather than the tx or driveshaft. Sequentially, I guess I first need to determine if the clutch is engaging. Is there an easy way to do that?

Have someone watch as you depress the clutch at the trans. Watch the slave push the clutch fork. If that moves its either the clutch or internal failure on the fork. My money is on the clutch being gone. Prob half the clutch is missing

Clutch fork moves with the pedal. Boot's torn but it seems to be operational. Ran it for a bit and I can go through gears with no clutch at all RPMs. What could it be other than the clutch? If the clutch engages at all, the transaxles should turn, right?

But it doesn't move when the clutch is out and you're in a gear? If its like that I'm betting the clutch is smoked. It's the next step in line anyways.

No, the fork doesn't move when I'm off the pedal. It seems to be the clutch and that would be the next anyway. I'm kinda under the assumption that something's wrong with the rest of the drivetrain. Can't imagine someone would dump a car because of just a clutch. Anyway, I will start there and see what's next.

I can see a person dumping a $1000 car that needs $1000 more in work.

I'm only in $400 so far so a clutch isn't too scary. I will get one on the way.

Needed some space so got back to the project. Anyway, it was the clutch. Once I got into it, I could see fibers all over the place. Whole disc was ~1/4" thick and one side down to metal.

It's up and running now and I've poked around enough to find next fixes: CV axle, blower, and PS pump leak.

Thanks to all who gave me advice and steered me to clutch. Hope to hold on to this rig for a while so I'll stick around the forum.
