Dwell/coilpack issues.any1 have experience with AEMcoilpacks

Post by usliberty »

I have a link plus standalone ems, I use it in 4-multicoil spark with 2-dual channel link ignitors. I'm using the factory subaru 2bolt- coilpacks(COP)that came with the phase 1 ej20g, I've been burning coilpacks randomly, sometimes its 6 months before I lose a cylinder other times its weeks. Did some calling around and apparently the ecu's dwell time is too long for the factory coilpacks and they overheat and fail. I found the AEM "dumb" coilpacks for about 240$ for 4, they look like they could handle a lot more heat and throw a much brighter spark. I don't want to switch to a wasted spark ignition as i have tried without any success. Anyone have any experience with the aem coil packs?

can you adjust the dwell time with the standalone?
if not perhaps the newer COP units will do the trick?
Never tried AEM units but they seem to make decent quality products

I ordered them so we shall see. The linkplis doesn not have dwell adjustment but the link ecu and aem both have a base dwell of 3ms so it should work.

Which generation/version of the Link Plus are you running? You should be able to control dwell. 3ms is pretty much what mine is set for when the battery voltage is above 13v.

Any pictures/links for the coils? I'm interested in switching to individual coils from the wasted spark setup, but haven't found a coil setup that I like and can fit into the space I have available in the engine bay. I also would need to get another igniter as well. How big are the Link igniters?

Thanks
Josh

Any progress in this matter?

I am sort of in the same boat.. I have the 1st gen. Possumlink plugin ecu.
I now use the center-mounted diamond coil pack from a V3 WRX, and the original 4ch igniter.

Wasted spark seems a waste to me, and i find the use of 2002 WRX cop appealing.
(ditch the standalone original igniter and wire the "smart" coils directly to the ecu i assume?)

Dont think i can change the dwell time on the Possumlink either (haven´t seen anything in the settings, the car runs now, so i wont play with the settings right now) so if i assume that its also 3Ms, will this fry the 2002+ coils?

Built engine, 850cc injectors, E85 and high boost, so a strong spark is needed!
Will the wrx 2002 cop cope with this, or would something from AEM or MSD be a better solution?

It seems like "usliberty" is satisfied with this solution : http://www.linkecu.com/forums/LinkG1Forum/724331847

A coil on plug gets a more clean look, in the cramped engine compartment, but i guess you can't always win. ;)

240$ is not a lot of money, i'll check if i can find something simillar in Europe.

Useful info on ignition and COP systems: http://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/cgi/viewcon ... =auto_pres

On the other hand, Toyota seems to be a popular COP conversion for mitsubishis and mazdas.. And a cheap solution indeed!
The Toyota COP looks a bit long, dont they?
