legacy perfomance parts?
so i am looking for a new car currently and was interested in subarus. there is a 5spd 96' legacy L sedan w/ 120k that i test drove and liked a lot. very clean interior, very clean extirior and felt much nicer than the impreza wagon i tried out. but what i was wondering is what can i do to this car if i decide to buy it to make it nice and stand out from the crowd of other stock legacys? is there any mods i could do to the engine to make it a little more fun to drive? can i get a scoop for the hood and such? i just want it to look nicer and i definately plan on changingng the wheels if i buy it. the car already felt like it was fairly quick, but can u buy intakes and stuff for legacys? any info would be greatly appreciated because id like to decide wether or not to buy this legacy asap.

You could probably fit the hood off an Outback or GT that has the scoop, but it would only increase drag with no benefit if you don't have an intercooler under it.

While I REALLY want a turbo Legacy, I honestly suggest that for a 17-year-old, find a good-condition nonturbo BC/BF Legacy.
There is no better car for a teenager's first car IMO. It's affordable, safe, easy to work on, easy and fun to drive, gets halfway-decent gas mileage, has reasonable insurance rates, is pleasurable to look at, and #1, it's tough as nails. No the ladies don't drool over the car, but girls who don't like my car don't get to find out anything about its driver

The car is fast enough. Save your money. Do the following in order
Perform a complete tune up (oxygen sensor included)
Repair any leaks
Replace items that should have been serviced but you are not sure (timing belt?)
Replace the struts
Get some WRX wheels and replace the tires
You will have a solid car that is fast and fun. Plus it will last a while.

And if new Hondas still harrass you, take a turn off road or spin donuts around 'em in the snow and remind them how old your car is and that it's paid for. See them try to bother you then. Plus you could always smash the hell out of them if that fails to console you...

evolutionmovement: No kidding. Its raining where Im at and except for other Subarus Ive got one of the fastest cars on the road! My 205 series tires with great wet traction just put the final nail in the coffin.
I was playing with a co-worker in his RSX Type-S and Upto 40mph I could cream him every single time. No matter what he did traction and lack of low end torque killed him.
This is in a car Ive spent less than 2000 dollars on INCLUDING the price of the car!

My 230k+ car can only be taken by a new SI at high speeds and I can outcorner them. Those cars are so overrarted. I don't understand the appeal of these heavy torqueless little things (CRXs excepted). I'd much rather have an old Caprice Classic if I were a kid - may not move fast, but it at least feels it.
Either way, a stock Legacy is plenty fast for a first car (these will cruise all day over 100). The first car I had that I was actually able to drive was an '84 GL wagon with 73 HP (but 90 lbs/ft @ 2400) and I still got in plenty of trouble with it - a new Legacy has double the power with only maybe another 500 extra lbs, not to mention the hugely advanced engine tech.

The turbo doesn't really affect the insurance rating... just the engine power - 160 hp, they don't even care that it has over 180 lb/ft of torque. It's a family sedan with 160 hp, that's all. It's not a performance vehicle (like a WRX, which by the way would have cost me $6500 a year in insurance as my primary vehicle
)
