If you query for the 90 - 94 Legacy, there's like 6 or 7 tests that pop up.

I agree, although the document says the dummy experienced higher than acceptable head injury, I'm kind of curious how that could be at 35.1mph. When I have more time I want to read up more on that, because having been in two front-end collisions myself (at higher speed, also without airbags) I can say my head didn't really come close to hitting anything. And one of the times the seatbelt tensioner didn't even work. My only conclusion at this point is that the automatic seatbelts suck so bad that you're more likely to die wearing them, and Subaru needs to replace all existing units with manual belts under a safety recall!

You're right.but I don't understand automatic seatbelts isssue.My car is 1.8GL I think automatic seatbelts is not available in my car.

I want to see how safe our cars.Some people claims new but cheap cars also better than old luxury cars.can it be possibble ?

Oh yeah. It depends on the crash but new cars have made crazy strides in safety. The passenger cabins have gotten stronger, while front and rear impact areas able to dissipate force more effectively. Some old full size cars and trucks will buckle at the passenger cabin when ran against a stationary object like a wall, bringing things like the steering wheel, dashboard, and windshield into your body or within range of you smacking them.

That said, starting with the Legacy and all the models after it, Subaru has always gotten top marks for its segment I believe. As far as compact cars go, the Impress and Legacy are very solid vehicles!

Heavier cars do still (and always will) have an advantage if you hit a smaller car. But its VERY impracticle to drive the largest vehicle on the road in the name of safety

OK new cars safer.but I wonder which one is better 2011 Dacia Symbol or 1991 Subaru Legacy.

Well, when you talk about cars made outside the US, all bets are off. I believe the US has the most strict crash standards by a long shot, there are quite a few non-US cars where in a crash test video it almost seemed like the car was intentionally designed to kill everyone inside.

It should go without saying that I would trust any Subaru (besides maybe the 360) over a Dacia.

Wonder how fast that Dacia was crash tested at. I can't say I like the fact the A-piller deformed. Most modern subies wouldn't do that.

The results for the Legacy look pretty good. Didn't read the report, just looked at the pictures.

Couple things.

The NHTSA test was done under ideal circumstances for the car; low speed, full width, uniform barrier. It still failed. If you drive an SS it weighs 400lbs more than the vehicle tested, so consider that. 400lbs more mass that is going to ask the crumple zone to slow it down.

Real world? Do not get in a crash with one of these cars over 15 mph and expect to be injury free. I would expect the safety systems to fail catastrophically in an unfavorable accident at freeway speeds.

At freeway speeds, I wouldnt trust anything short of having a vehicle that uses the other as a cushion. At ~45mph, experience tells me you will probably walk away if the car isn't a tin can.

Having been hit at the drivers front corner in my 93 touring wagon by a red light runner doing 45mph it was a commercial Ford Transit 4990lbs and suffering no injuries. its good to know that Subaru built these cars well. The frame on my wagon was bent but otherwise it was all cosmetic fenders, hood etc..
