Differences between 91 and 92-94 turbos?

Post by Ranmatchi »

Hi all, I'm looking at getting a 5MT tubo and was looking at a 94, but it was sold too quickly. So, I was also looking at a 91, but I wasn't quite sure of the differences between the first year turbo's and the later years. I know the front (and maybe rear) styling changed, airbag was added, rear suspension is different (how, though?), possibly a LSD in the 91, and heated seats in the later styles. What other differences (mechanically and physically) are there? Are there things I should be more cautious about with the 91 than the 94?

Looking forward to being part of the Legacy Turbo family!

Thanks,
Adam

Heated seats? I sure could use some of those.

The 91 also has a Bosch 4-channel ABS instead of the 3-channel one in the later models. The rear suspension is also a bit different, but it's updateable. I don't think Airbags were standard either...

Mechanically speaking, there's nothing that really separates them.

I think the interiors started getting nicer for 93+ models. black instead of grey. nicer steering wheel. whatnot.

Actually I really like the interior of the 91 Turbo's :D Thats if you guys are talking about the dark and medium gray version. Differences on the 91's include different headlights and corner lenses along with hood and grills. Different tailights and center bar. A few changes in the interior. Rear suspension. LSD. TCU changes (93-94). Other than those differences, chassis wise and engine wise their the same.

Thanks for the info! Very helpful, it sounds like the majority of the differences are strictly appearence. However, whats the benifit/drawback of the 4 channel ABS rather than the 3 channel? Or the rear suspension differences? (Are the rear suspension differences because of the LSD?) Those sounded like the only two mechanical changes between the years.

Thanks,

The suspension, LSD, and ABS are the only mechanical differences, but do note that the headlights are an important functional difference. 92-94 headlights are much better than 91 headlights; they use a "harmonized" DOT/ECE beam pattern that's a lot like European headlights.
