Impreza or 2nd Gen headlights?

Post by Jake_ak_cent »

I've been searching through the forums but haven't found any answers yet so I'll just ask. Does anybody know if you can get 1st gen Impreza headlights or 2nd Gen legacy headlights to fit a 1st gen Legacy without ridiculous amounts of modification? I think it would give a nice update to the front end of our cars.

Also side note on lips, will an 04-05 sti v limited replica lip work on a 1st Gen Legacy or does it have to be an 06-07 lip. I only ask because while searching eBay I was only pulling up 04-05 lips with the exception of 4 or 5 06-07 lips which weren't replicas and had +$300 price tags. If anybody has a link to an 06-07 v limited replica lip on eBay that would be great as well.

Hi Jake, welcome to our forums.

You may have noticed there are actually 2 distinct styles of 1st gen legacys (besides the whole sedan/wagon thing, lol) - pre and post-facelift. To swap headlights between those two styles actually requires swapping fenders, hood and grill, as well as redrilling holes and modifying the openings for the headlight buckets, rewiring all the lights, etc...And that's just for 1st gen legacys! :(

For 2nd gen Legacys or 1st gen Impreza's, unfortunately, it's not that simple. They are both the wrong shape and size. So if you are, or know, a competent body guy this is a cakewalk. But if you're like me and prefer bolt-on solutions, then this isn't one of those projects.

The good news is, you can swap in JDM or EDM glass headlights from pre or post facelift cars. These make a significant increase in your beam quality and light output, and appearance as the glass doesn't dull or yellow with age like the plastics. Other cool features can include city lights (a 2nd smaller light in each headlight bucket), headlight leveling switches, and perhaps headlight washers if you're into that.

Rear JDM or EDM garnish and tail lights look pretty cool and unique too.

Thanks I'll have to look into some JDM lighting options. I would still like to see Impreza or 2nd gen Legacy headlights done, but that'll have to wait till the future when I'll have the extra time to dedicate to a project like that.

Those lights to me are just more aesthetically pleasing with the taper they have in the inside upper corner, versus the brick rectangle shape of the 1st gen lights.

QFT. Pre-facelift looks so much more aggressive. I honestly didn't even really notice until I got my car and now I'm so glad it's a 91.

My first car was a 90 Jeep Cherokee limited, bread box ftw! But, i like the less agressive look, especially around my area. The cops in MA SUCK! They'll make any excuse to pull you over, especially if it's an agressive looking car...
