Mine does the same thing sometimes. It's very annoying  My driver side lock assembly is broken too so I plan on rekeying (is that a word?) the car and replacing the lock mechanism in the driver side (for the second time)

I don't know where the thread is, but I bet your problem is the interior lock button. There's a hairpin spring that returns the button to the handle to the flush position. The other end of the spring is 'secured' by a small plastic tab under the lock button. When this tab goes the once fixed end of the spring rests against the lock button, pushing it to the lock position as soon as you release it. This has happened to me with both front doors. What I did was remove the interior lock unit and hold the hairpin spring up while inserting a metal rod where the tab used to be. Then I dremelled the inside of the lock button so the edges didn't interfere with the rod going across the body of the unit. When it's done there's no way to tell unless you have someone look for it. Saved $80 from the dealer.

I found a page on the web that walked me through fixing the problem. It was simple and only involved adding some wire to the inside of your lock mechanism. I have it bookmarked somewere, but I'm not my house in Washington currently. I'll post it sometime next week or the week after.

I believe you want this page http://www.geocities.com/hobiegary/locks.html

Works like a charm. I did both my front doors using a paper clip.

A little different from my method where I use a heavier gauge steel wire and drill two holes directly across the body so that the wire will be vertical once the unit is in the car. The hook of the spring rests on it from underneath. You don't have to modify the door with this method, but the other method does require less tools and maybe time.

Identical problem for all four doors. I did this to one front and one rear. I need to do it to the other rear door. Thanks Josh, that was the page I was going to post. Oh, I didn't do any modification to the doors as he suggests in there. I was able to make it fit fine with the wire around the back side of the locking mechanism.

Yup, I didn't mess with the door at all. Took me a few minutes to figure out the driver's side. I did the pass. side in like 5 min.

Great little fix, only cost is one freakin paper clip.

door lock

Post by seank »

you guys are a lot smarter than me. I spent like an hour and a half with no luck. What part do you wrap the wire or paperclip around? I can see the spring but a little lost after that. I'm doing a front passnger door on a 91 LS Sedan.

This is nothing new. In fact, I have not talked to ONE BC/BF Legacy owner that has not had some form of this problem...

seank, when you take the door panel off, pull the handle a couple times while watching the handle/lock assembly to see exactly what's happening. This is what I plan to do when I get my lazy ass around to fixing all the doors except mine on my Legacy :?.

A paperclip seemed weak to me so I used a heavier rod (~.040"). If you look at the inside of the lock button from the handle side, you should be able to see the clothespin-type spring that returns the handle to the flush position. There's a little plastic tab that holds the opposite end of the spring - that breaks off. you should be able to see a small broken plastic part in the center of the black plastic that makes up the body of the lock. The end of the spring that should be held by the now broken tab will be pushing up against the lock button, pushing it into the locked position. I drilled holes across the lock body so when I installed the metal rod it would locate in the same place the tab had been. I held the spring down with pliers and installed the rod. The only problem is that with this method you have to grind out the lock button a little so the sides will clear the rod. This is more important on the driver's side if you want to be able to push it further to unlock all the doors from the inside. I had to grind mine twice and its still a little stiff, but I'm too lazy to pull it again. When its all done you should not be able to see the ground parts wfter the lock assembly is reinstalled so no one will know.

I fixed my front passenger lock with this problem today. Using a paper clip can be a huge mistake. Mine broke in half from all the bending, so I ended up using some wire. About the same diameter but much more flexible than the paper clip.
