on the freeway when 3rd and 4th just dissapeared

Post by antslegggy »

I was on the freeway just cruising, and from second to third the car has been starting to hesitate its a 4eat. but while doing 40+ the car goes to shift from second to third, and the car takes a second, kinda tries to think about what it wants to do, then all the sudden just red lines. I managed to get off, tried to manually shift from drive to third. both 4th and 3rd just redline with no power being put down to the road, only first and second have power.
sorry, the cars a 2.2 sports sedan 4eat.
so is the whole transmission a bust and im just out a car. or is there someway around this that doesnt cost more then what I paid for the car? i only paid 2500$ this is my first car and i absolutely love subarus and dont want to scrap it. is there anything i can do guys?

Sounds like the trans gave up the ghost. If it were me I'd strongly consider a 5mt swap

^ research it a bit and the trans will only cost 300 or so, and i bet if you buy beer and ask REALLY nice, the guys around your area may even help you drop it in! then there's this small matter of learning stick lol

Have you checked the trans fluid to see if it looks or smells burnt? Something happened inside the trans. It could be a blocked fluid passage or a failed part, but until you open it up, it's hard to say. If it's just something in the valve body, that can be removed without dropping the trans. If you could find a shop that would give you a free estimate, that might be a good way to go.

josh, helpful as always, i really appreciate it. also, SERIOUSLY??? only around 300 for everything needed for a 5 speed? I would kill to get everything needed for that cheep, i dont even mind doing to work myself. also, i checked the fluid and it looked kinda burnt. I was told to pull some sort of screen and see if had bits of metal in it. if not it could be a solenoid ? im researching what to pull and where to look but ive never done anything like that before.

300 for the trans itself, then there's clutch, press plate, pedal set, clutch MC, 5speed driveshaft, repinning the ecu... Bunch of stuff

ya thats what i thought. i am currently in the process of looking for that stuff. so for the external filter, do i need to drain the whole trans or is it something i can just run out to the car and check?

What you should be checking is the internal screen on the fluid pick up. You'll need to drop the pan to get access to this. I would recommend doing this so you can also see what or if anything is stuck to the magnet.

hey guys, if i pull the pan and there is chunks of metal in there, do i even bother doing the flush and filter swap? id rather not waste any money that i dont need to if i need to get a new car/ tranny. im only 23 and not raking in the dough. if i get in there and there is decent chunks of stuff in there is that transmission just shot and gone forever?

If you find chunks, then no I wouldn't bother with anything further on the trans.
