boost gauge wiring issue

Post by stiglogic »

okay, I have scoured this forum, as well as the rest of the internet, and I can not get a definitive answer regarding this. I installed a boost gauge(stock WRX gauge) and as far as the vacuum/boost line goes, it works fine. My issue is wiring the damn thing. I have seen all sorts of suggestions as to where, but nothing solid, and even on the ones that seem solid, do pictures, charts, wire colors, etc. I have my dash torn apart as I type this, and I was going to wire in to the cigarette lighter. This, however, is proving difficult. There are 4 wires. 2 on the bottom, that appear to both be red/green. And then a white, and a black ground mounted on the actual unit(ground on the side, white on the back center) What line needs to be tapped. Either? Both? None? Anything solid helps. I am about to break the internet out of frustration.

Update: One wire is red/green. The other is just red. If it is the same as the stereo wiring, then the solid red should be ilumination, and the red/green is constant 12v? So I would wire the hot side in the constant 12v (red/green), and the ground to illumination(red)? Or do I have that backwards?

Update 2: So I couldn't wait for an answer, I had to button her up and move her before the hen of the house came home, so I took a guess. I guessed right. The red/green is where you tap in the ground, the solid red is the constant 12. Hopefully someone else will be able to use this information.

Yes best answer for these type of questions is to use a volt meter. With the LED you can't hook up to the ill because it wont dim correctly or something like that. So you would just tape into whatever one is either switched when the car is on or with ACC, your choice. If it has a memory setting tape into a hot wire, meaning 12V with the key out of the car.

It doesn't really matter which wire you hook into on the cigarette lighter illumination. A regular incadescent light bulb is a resistive element in a circuit and will work the same regardless of which way the electricity is flowing.

For future reference, these red wires are the two wires you should tap into for illumination.
