What's this in my tranny pan?

Post by davew833 »

It's half price weekend at the you-pull yard near me. I scouted out a '92 Legacy SS with a used tranny I wanted. Car was bashed in on the side which is probably why it was there. Fluid was nice & red. Inside the car I found a receipt for labor to replace a transmission, and the tranny itself had a rebuilder's tag on it. Woot! I thought- rebuilt transmission for $50! I dropped the pan just to double check before I pulled the tranny and this broken piece of something was inside-- does anybody recognize it? It looks to have been a flat ring about 3" in diameter by 3/8" wide by 1/32" deep at one time and is not metallic. Hard to replace? Tranny project is on 'hold' 'til I figure it out.

I can't figure out how to post a picture but here's a link.

Maybe looks like some kinda gasket. Hell for $50 i'd still take it. I bet even if the tranny was bad, some of those gears can be sold off to people who need to rebuild theirs that blew up.
the guy who had the really low winestone SS on the corvette wheels

Is it hard or flexible? If it's hard, I'd guess that it may be friction material for one of the clutch plates.

It's flexible to a point, then it snaps.

If I had to guess I'd say it's clutch disc friction material. I think a gasket would be more flexible....

For those of you following this thread a couple of members over on USMB identified it as the plastic thrust washer for the reverse drum.

Interesting....did they say what impact it may have on the transmission since it's no longer there?

Here's a link to the discussion thread over on USMB.

The consensus was that I *could* run it that way, but it's fairly easy to replace so it would definitely be better to do so.
