Harness Rebuild - Where To Buy Wires

Post by kimokalihi »

I've been trying to diagnose a very elusive TPS code causing engine cutouts and the only thing I can think of is the wiring somewhere is shorting or is broken. I will probably decide to rebuild the whole engine harness for starters and then maybe even the cabin side as well but hopefully not. Some wires are shielded and some are not. I'd like to use oem quality wires and have a large assortment of colors and strips and label them all with a sleeve labeling printer. If I do this I will be rerouting the harness under the tmic in the center of the firewall so its out of the way and cleaner.

Where can I buy the wires at? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

What about using an un molested na harness and just adding the boost sensors?

That might work but the problem is they're 20+ years old so the wiring is never in very good shape. If I'm going to go through the trouble to rebuild this for the second time I want new wires with nice flexible jackets.

Ive heard of ppl using wrx harnesses and converting them. Also if your going that route with funds in the bank have you considered going standalone? I would personally source a good used harness, my harness was burnt to f### at the cam/crank parts and I was able to find a perfect used harness

The wrx harness will surely cost $50-$100, might as well spend that on heat shrink and wire. There's no telling if those wires or wires from any existing harness will be long enough for a custom routed harness anyway. I doubt it. I want to eliminate any chance of wiring failure once and for all. I don't have the money go go stand alone nor pay for a professional tune right now.

The TPS sensor doesn't run through the engine harness, but from the back of the bulkhead harness through the firewall.

I don't know a source for all the multiple color wiring like the factory, but I would assume one of the big online electrical parts stores might have a variety of wiring. An "easy" shielded wire solution is to use microphone wire. I posted in the evoscan thread, but have you checked the idle switch?

Not yet. I did the whole fsm ptocedure for the tps but I don't remember if that included the idle switch.

Have you sourced the pins, connectors and crimp tool?

Try http://www.mcmaster.com for wire. They have a good selection and as many colors as your likely to find outside of the automotive industry. MTW (machine tool wire) is likely close to what you find in automotive harnesses. Click around and search the site, you'll be surprised what they carry.

I also found www.awcwire.com for specialized automotive wire, but I'm guessing this stuff will be $$$.
