Turbo help!

Post by devinshaw3 »

I just had a few questions about turbos, im not very smart when it comes to a turbo at all so i was hoping someone could help me! i have a 92 legacy sport i was curious what turbo came stock on the ej22t. Also i was wondering the difference between a garrett t3/t4 or a td04 or a garret t04. the reason i ask is because i have the chance to buy those turbos i just wonder which would be the most beneficial to buy for my car. I would just like to know alil info about my car and turbos please help!

The stock turbo that came on the north american turbo Legacy was an IHI VF11 turbo. This turbo has a 90 degree inlet and a diagonal outlet. Both of which make finding a "plug & play" replacement turbo difficult.

I don't really have any knowledge of the garret turbos, however they more than likely do not have the appropriate exhaust flanges to bolt up to the stock exhaust piping. That's not a deal killer, but just makes using it much more involved.

The TD04 is a little better than the stock VF11, but unless you plan to install an intercooler I probably wouldn't bother swapping it in for the vf11.

The Td04 one is actually part of a little package deal. it comes with a tmic off of a 06 wrx and all the silicon hoses and everything i need. so u think i should? would it be enough of a difference to actually notice?

That depends on price and if you plan to do any more supporting mods in the futre. If not just stick with the stock vf11.

Also Even tho the TD04 Comes with the intercooler, you may have to make modifications to the intercooler piping. Read the TD05 & 06 WRX TMIC Install thread in the intercooler section.

The intercooler is from a guy on here and has already been modified. and what do you mean by supporting mods? Like bigger injectors and stuff like that?

I like my TD04 upgrade. i did it different then most; i installed a FMIC rather then a TMIC. am i getting some pressure drop.. probably.

The TD04 is a nice cheap upgrade before you have to start doing injectors, fuel pump, etc etc. the TD04 is a noticeable difference for power.

If the $$ is right i would do the modification if i was you. :)

Oh good, You could find some 440cc injectors and rails, walbro fuel pump, hell even start picking up stuff for a dohc swap. There are tons of options for these, not just turbo. Take a few days and read some of the stickies in the individual forums. Also, browse the build journals, you will find just about any modification in there.

Stock boost level should be about 9psi.

Stock turbo can run maybe 13-15 psi with an intercooler and a walbro 255lph fuel pump but is really pushing past its efficient range. A bigger turbo at this point would be needed if the power levels are unsatisfactory. ..

You will hit fuel cut after being above 13psi for 3 seconds.

As mentioned before though youll need supporting mods to make increased boost levels safe.
