Engine build, need some advise
So tonight I noticed that the main pulley on the crank was loose and when feeling around I noticed that the keyway was missing. I have an extra keyway, but in trying to remove the main crank bolt it snapped off and there is about 1/2-1" of bolt still inside the crank. This totally sucks, but I also have another EJ22t that I can drop in the car for now to get it back on the road. I want to take this motor and do a build rather than just throw a new crank in.
I need help on doing a build since this will be my first. I want to run a stock crank because I dont want to go through the hassle of matching the bearing journals. I am thinking of doing at least EJ25d heads or STI heads if I an come up with funds for it. I am thinking of going with the Wesico pistons .20 over, Manley or Eagle rods, ACL race bearings on a stock crank. Is this even a likely option? My plan is to eventually run a VF-39 turbo or something comparable.
I need input on what will be a descent, reliable build that will put down some descent power.

HI,
You've got some reading ahead of you.
And what do you consider 'decent power'? Everybody has a different idea on that one.
I'm not the 'built engine expert' by any means, but your Wiseco/Manley or Eagle/ACL combo will work, and since the crank and rods are forged, they should be good for any power goals that include a VF39 (300HP max).
Remember that only the EJ25D or EJ20G heads will 'easily' work w/the stock engine harness on the intake manifold. W/the STi heads you'd likely need to go to a standalone to run it.
I'd add a Rob Tune to your future mod goals as I highly recommend some kind of EM for any turbo above a TD04. Member BSOD2600 had a TD05 (roughly equivalent to a VF39) on the stock engine and he ran into issues w/the stock EM.

Another thing to note is that the ej22 and ej22t cranks are identical. If you are looking for another crank to swap in.

Re: Engine build, need some advise
Are the 1.8 Cranks also the same? I'm not sure where I got the idea but I was under the impression that the ej22/ej22t/ej1.8 all used the same forged crankshaft

I am not sure about the 1.8 liter cranks.

Re: Engine build, need some advise
Woops I left that part out, I would also be going with a Rob Tune. I have 5 more cranks that seems to be in good condition, I would just get it lightly machined to be sure it is good to go. I think first thing first, when I pull the motor I am going to see if I can't get the remaining part of the crank bolt out with a removal tool, if not that is when my build plans will start. Would you guys suggest going with upgraded rods or just run the stock with the weisco pistons? I would like to do this as cheap as possible but still do it right. I will likely go with the EJ25D heads as the seem fairly easy to find without major modifications. I just want to try and get all of my information together before I start buying parts.
Re: Engine build, need some advise
But to answer the question about the power, I am not really sure what I can accomplish out of the parts that I had mentioned and would be willing to look at other options other than the VF-39, they just seem to be widely available. Also like I mentioned, I would like it to be reliable as well.
Re: Engine build, need some advise
I would go for upgraded rods. The stock rods are "ok", but if you don't want to split the case again, I'd do the rods now.
I'll throw my comments about the EJ25D heads....they are non-turbo heads, so they will need to be tapped for the oil & coolant feed lines on the passenger head. Additionally, the cams are meant for a non-turbo engine and will have more valve overlap. This is not desirable on a turbo car since you have boost pressure scavaging the cylinder. Will they work, sure, but you need to just be aware of the little things if you go this route.

Re: Engine build, need some advise
So if I ended up going with the EJ25d heads, I would likely want to run different cams or I could just go with the EJ20g heads and call it a day. I am completely fine with knowing to upgrade the rods as long as I am doing it now rather than having to redo it again later.
Re: Engine build, need some advise
FYI, The EJ20G cams (and maybe EJ20K) will work in the EJ25D heads. That's what and others have done. They come up for sale on NASIOC occasionally.

Re: Engine build, need some advise
I am also looking into other options and wondering if I would be better off going with a complete EJ20g swap rather than building my EJ22t. What would suggestions be on this? It would be between a stock EJ20g or a built EJ22t.

Re: Engine build, need some advise
If you're going to be running a Robtune, I'd say save your.money and get a stock 20g. A built 22t will be way overkill for the same power level.
