I will try to provide as much information I can but im just trying to see if anyone has an idea as to what might have gone wrong with my motor. I am no subie engine expert by any means. In short, I have a dead motor with zero compression in three out of four cylinders. Its the original motor from a 93 SS touring wagon running the stock ECU.
It was running just fine and all of a sudden I fired it up in the driveway, it was barely running and after a few startups it just wouldnt start anymore. I checked all the easy stuff, electrical, fuel, etc. and came up with nothing. The ecu was throwing a couple codes but as far as i could find online, nothing that would kill a motor. one was for the MAF and one was for some solenoid.(codes 35 and 49). I thought maybe the timing belt slipped but I was under the impression these motors are noninterference, correct? I ended up taking it to a japanese engine shop an they did the compression test.
I have a TD04 turbo from a WRX on it with top mount intercooler. No major mods. All the fuel system is stock as far as I know. I havent had the car long. Anyone have any ideas as to how I fried the motor?? Did i burn it up? I know this isnt much info and im sure it could be a lot of things but im just baffled as to how this happened. Any input would be appreciated. Im putting a completely rebuilt EJ22t back in it next week. I just want to avoid having this happen again.

Hi,
Welcome to the LC BBS.
All the EJ22 are non-interference 'til '97.
I'm not clear on whether you pulled the front timing covers off (3 pieces) and checked the belt??
Hopefully that simple, but the 'japanese engine shop' should've been able to verify that???

Re: Dead Ej22T
check the timing as wtdash said about and do a leakdown test, or atleast put some air into the respective cylinders and listen in the oil filler/exhaust/or coolant bubbles to see where you are losing pressure
the engines are non interference, so if its the timing-- replace it and probably water pump while you are in there

Re: Dead Ej22T
Yeah I would suspect the timing belt slipped several teeth more than anything. Compression loss typically just doesn't happen all of a sudden.

Re: Dead Ej22T
I agree, timing belt. Check it first before removing the engine....check that all marks line up....
