Auto to Manual: Bump the shift selector back to P????

Post by robertpaige »

Okay so I got a new car, it's had an auto to manual swap. I ended up pulling up the shift collumn to replaced my shifter and in the midst of that, the gear selector changed from P to R, and now it is inhibiting the car to start. At the shift boot, underneath there are a bunch of plugs, a black, green, and blue plus one that has a metal clicker thing, if you click it theres a click from under the dash. Dunno what it is.

My question is how the hell to I change the gear selector now that I don't have one, I must have bumped something for it to move from park to reverse on the cluster.

Robert,

Can you please clarify your post.

You mention that the car has been swapped from AT to MT, but if it has it should not have an AT shifter selector. Unless I'm completely not understanding what you are asking.

Sorry, I edited my OP and fixed my typos and made it a bit more clear.. typing on a phone sucks.

It has the AT to MT swap. Somehow between the last few days and the car being down for some work, the selector in the cluster moved from PARK to REVERSE and I have no idea how that happened, weather I bumped something, I dunno. I need to find a way to get the cluster back to PARK so I can start the car...

Just pull the shift lock system and all the associated AT bullshit out of the car, including the TCU. There's no reason for that stuff to be there any more.

The only reason for those things to be in there is if whoever did the swap did not do it "completely". If so, by removing the shift lock, TCU, and other associated AT components, the car may not start, the cruise control may not work, and you may need to adjust the AT/MT identifier pin on the ECU.

I would highly recommend you read over my AT/MT swap electrical section

I go into detail on all the stuff that is needed to be done in order for the electrical to function properly.

Thanks Josh. The inhibitor switch got bumped, it's in the engine bay. Got it back to P and we're good.

I'm confused.....if it's a MT, there should not be an inhibitor switch. The inhibitor switch is physically installed on the automatic transmission.

Well, they left it hooked up and it's just sitting in the engine bay....

Ok, well....let me put it this way, I would have done it differently... They left those AT components in there to keep the AT related computers (TCU, shift lock, & key interlock) happy. Like I said, you can remove all that crap and do the swap per the instructions on my site and have everything work perfectly.

I definitely will do that once I get the car running up to par. It runs like shit right now, so i'm trying to get it driveable first before I go and clean everything up. But I will because that interlock thing is a pain in the ass. I wish they wouldn't have half assed everything!

Honestly....the half assed swap may be causing some of your drivability issues. I know it may add another variable into the mix, but it could also eliminate some of your issues. The ECU may be freaking out if it's receiving a speed input, but also receiving an input from the inhibitor switch that the transmission is in park. It may not be a big deal, but it also could be the cause of some problems.
