Transmission swap for 92 turbo touring wagon
Hello I just bought a 92 automatic turbo legacy touring wagon with a bad transmission. The only gears I have are 3rd and reverse which seemed odd. So we went and bought a tranny off a 99 Legacy sus and were thinking about putting it in the wagon. I was wondering if any one knew how hard of a job this would be? We would need a new rear diff for the different gear ratio but if any one knows if we would need new cv axles or have to mess with any ecu or wiring problems? Any advise would help, thanks.

Andy you only need the axles if they are different male/female ends than what u have already. I've heard of some ppl needing the tcu and others not needing it sooo you and I will have to document a lot on these swaps we are about to do to help others down the line...
Also make a build thread and get some pics up of that beast

Welcome to the LC BBS.
I know this post is getting old, but wanted to point out that the '99 was the 1st year of the Phase 2 4EAT (and the Phase 2 EJxx short block on the Legacy SUS/OB/GT).
I highly doubt the transmission will run correctly as the TCU won't be compatible, let alone plug in - @ either the TCU or the wiring harness for the tranny. The rear diff and axles from the SUS should work, but you'll also have an issue w/the pinion flange on the rear diff as the bolt holes are spaced differently (changed around '95), so you'll need to deal w/either changing it (kind of a PITA) or you'll need to figure out which driveshaft combo will work.
Another '91-94 turbo Legacy trans ( sedan or wagon) or '92-'94 Legacy non-turbo/NA will be plug-n-play (get the TCU from an NA car).
I have heard that the '95-'98 Legacy or Impreza trannys will work 'as is'. Those from the 2.5 cars (GT, OB, LSi) are 4.44 FD ratio; the 2.2 are 4.11. I'd guess the 2.5 may be stronger???
