5spd pedal install help

Post by James614 »

Okay, this is f-fing stupid. Got my EJ20G and 5 sod trans mostly installed, and the hardest part so far is the damn pedals. It looks like the main wire harness behind the dash runs through a rigid raceway thats right in the way of where the top part of the master cylinder bracket bolts to (above the gas pedal). It appears the only way to move it is to take out the entire dash and heater core just to get an extra 1" or so of clearance to get the pedals in place. How have other people handled this? Josh's writeup mentions spending 10 hrs on the pedals and moving the steering column, but doesn't mention what I'm running into hat I can find.

If I do have to take out the entire dash, then I give up and will sell the car mid-swap. Not really, but I will be quite pissed, its like the rest of the swap is just a little tease, and then the pedals were engineered just to ruin your life right when you thought you were on top.

I don't know the answer in your case, but I have put manual pedals in several subarus, and struggled till I dropped the steering column. Can you take a pic of the problem area?

I'll take a pic today. I have the steering column dropped the struggle here is getting it moved up the last 1" or so to the upper mounting holes. I got 1 hole cranked down by forcing it, and it just bent the mounting tabs.

James,

It's possible the wiring harness is in a different location on the 93's. Do you see any bolts or a way to move the harness out of the way so you can get the pedal box installed properly?

I haven't been back to be able to work on it as planned, but it seems like the only way to move it is to remove the dash as whatever is securing it isn't accessible from just the foot well.

I've got a planned though, I'm going to use even more brute force, and whether I bend the pedal mounts or the conduit, it should be faster and easier than taking apart the entire dash. I didn't plan to be so crude with this swap but I don't have the time or patience for fitness here.

Can you take some pictures to show us what you're trying to do and the area where the pedal box is hitting the wiring.

I will try to get a snap of it after work this week. I won't actually work on it again till next weekend.

Got to peek in there last week, and to my surprise, the problem area is almost completed seated where it needs to be. Either the car gods sent their angles to alleviate my problem, or leaving the pedals halfway bolted in with tension against the conduit made it slowly yield as the car sat in the sun. Couldn't work on it this weekend, but should be smooth sailing from here!
