They did a great job styling the front end.

The concept cars had the 4.6 DOHC supercharged V8 used in the 2003 SVT Cobra running just over 400hp
Engine options are the 4.6 SOHC 3valve and DOHC with 4valve.

Even the v6 rental car model isnt bad, over 200hp from the same 3l from the Tuarus

5 or 6 speed manual and 4 speed auto

BTW, you should be able to tell by now Im not an Import snob or Subaru fanatic 8)

Neither am I. I started off with old American cars. I can appreciate any car with character, which this new Mustang will probably have. It definitely has the looks. To me the last Mustang was the Boss 302/429 and this has a definite derivative look. I hate retro as a cop out to originality, but damn it looks good - whatareyougonnado?

Oh so supposedly they aren't using the 4.0 sohc v6 like in the explorer. The rumor floats around alot but Ive seen from more reliable sources it is in fact the newer Duratec Taurus/Escape/Lincoln LS engine. Which BTW has Variable valve timing!

At Sema a 4.6l engine crate engine which was increased to 5l was introduced, some say the mustang may get this but I doubt it. Read the specs here http://www.muscle-mustangs.com/Ford%20C ... 0Motor.htm

Ford's definitely taking the Mustang in the right direction, I think it's beautiful, and the SVT is supposed to have 500hp

I wonder if its the same as the SVT Lightning?

"all-aluminum, 5.4-liter DOHC supercharged and intercooled V-8 engine conservatively rated at 500 horsepower and 500 foot pounds of torque (SAE net). And while they were at it, they invented and patented a speed secret for those times when even that much power just isn't enough.

Ford's patented SuperCooler technology cleverly provides a special burst of power for the SVT Lightning concept. Traditional intercoolers dissipate heat from the supercharged air by circulating coolant through a front-mounted, air-cooled radiator. With the SuperCooler system, the vehicle's air conditioning system is used to chill a small storage tank of coolant to about 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

On demand, the SuperCooler system switches the intercooler flow from its normal circulation and dumps the chilled coolant into the engine's intercooler. In turn, the intercooler dissipates up to 20 percent more heat from the charge air - resulting in a denser air charge.

A green light on the instrument panel indicates the system's readiness. SuperCooler is activated automatically when the driver depresses the accelerator to a wide-open-throttle position.

"This technology plays directly into the hands of the enthusiast," Coletti says. "The SuperCooler provides the edge for the driver, and it is done simply by taking advantage of the hardware that already exists in the vehicle."

As a result of this cool technology, the SVT Lighting concept can give its driver as much as 50 transient horsepower for short bursts of 30-45 seconds and regenerate within 2 minutes under normal driving conditions. While its effect is similar to that of an aftermarket nitrous oxide system, the SuperCooler is completely self-contained, environmentally friendly and regenerative.

The SVT Lightning concept engine features a Lysholm, screw-type supercharger, paired with both an intercooler and the new SuperCooler system. The 32-valve, double-overhead-cam powerplant boasts Manley connecting rods, two fuel injectors per cylinder and high-performance heads similar to those on the limited-edition 2000 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra R.

Exhaust gases escape through free-flowing headers and dual side pipes, producing a classic American V-8 rumble. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual transmission. The same Tremec T-56 transmission is used in the 2003 Ford SVT Mustang Cobra. In keeping with the performance nature of the SVT Lightning, the short-throw, console-mounted shifter is more like that of a sports car than a traditional pickup's long-shaft, floor mounted shift lever.

Thanks Ciper! I heard about the A/C intercooler system and was going to look up the patent on that as I was curious how that worked. Didn't know they used it on the Lightning. The new Mustang's supposed to be based on the Lincoln LS platform so it should also be a hug step up from the older Mustangs performance and rigidity wise also. About damn time! And with the new Vette coming out. Our kids will talk about these days. 600hp Mercedes sedans, V10 pickups, and 400+hp station wagons - things are getting crazy.

I'm personally not a huge fan of all the retro styling that is going on. Some styling is obviously better then others, but IMO the whole retro thing means that designers are loosing their edge to create new designs that can actually be used in mass production.....and not some funky concept model.

But that's my opinion....

I'm happy that the car market is turning into a horsepower war again, we're gonna have plenty of cheap fast cars in a few years

the tossers behind the wheel of course will be living in the past

soon the babyboomers will parish and perhaps a new era of automobile styling will emerge that people will want to reflect upon in the future

Yeah, they'll introduce retro-styled cars that look like retro-styled cars from 20 years earlier.

And while I'm not an import snob necessarily, I do prefer them, and Subarus are my favorite. I might own other cars in my life, but Subarus will always hold a special place in my heart!
