hood shakage
has anyone noticed that our hoods, or at least on my '91, shakes arround quite a bit at highway speeds? can i remove that peice in the midle of the hoodscoop that blocks air from coming strait down through the entrance to the engine on the bottomside of the scoop? would this make it catch the wind a bit less? or could it be shaking because of the gap on the front of the hood between the hood and the headlights and grill? i noticed the gap is a lot smaller on my moms '97 outback. thanks, Teague

my hood doesnt shake at all. i bet youre missing those little rubber doohickies that go on the sides, or you dont know how to close the hood or something like that. Compare your car to someone elses, you'll prolly notice youre missing something

My RS's hood shakes all the time. I ran without the hoodscoop-plug for a while, I think it got better. Give it a shot. The only problems is that it makes your engine a bit dirtier (shrug).
Of course, if your hood-release is not properly grabbing onto the hood, that could be pretty sketchy. Just picture that rally car last season that got it's hood plastered across its windshield while the car was blasting down the road.

If your hood is shaking, there is a problem somewhere. The striker for the release may be misaligned fore-aft, left-right, or up-down. The little rubber spacers above the headlights may be at the wrong height or missing entirely. The bolts holding the hood to the hinges may be loose.
Please figure it out and fix it. Don't just mask the problem by reducing the wind resistance a little. My girlfriend once had this vibrating hood problem on her '89 Mazda 626, and, while she was driving her dad to his place to show him how it vibrated, the vibration overpowered the latches and the hood flew up into the windshield, shattering it. Once the hood moves up even a little, air flowing under it can very easily push it higher, especially at speed. She was only going 50mph on a side road, and nobody got hurt (other than the poor car), but if that had happened on a highway it could easily have meant lost lives.

please do fix it...my hood does not rattle at all... even in excess of 100mph (not that i would kno
) my friend used to have a jeep cherokee and his engine kept overheatin so he thought it was a good idea to leave the hood barely up while drivin... told him not to... bout 2 days later the thing flew back, bent the hood, broke the wipers and the sprayers and all the plastic trim in front of the windshield... fortunately the windshield didnt shatter and he aint wreck.. scary nonetheless

I checked again. At highway speeds I can see small vibrations in the hoods of both cars. The vibrations are maybe 1/8 inch - 1/4 tops. I still have a hunch that this is normal because I find it hard to believe that something is dangerously wrong on both cars by chance. But, I could be "dead" wrong so I'll check all those things you list.If your hood is shaking, there is a problem somewhere. a little vibration is to be expected....especially at higher speeds.....
