93 Legacy 5 speed swap questions

Bought myself a very clean rust free 93 Legacy LS wagon but it's auto. I have a donor 98 Outback 5 speed in my garage I can use but I'm not sure on what axles I'll need. The wiring should be easy enough. If anyone has any advice please let me know. Thanks!

-make sure to match the rear diff to your new transmission's final drive: you'll be needing a 4.11FD diff. Your current one is 3.9
-you need the pedal set that matches the transmission (hydraulic type from a Forester, Legacy or Impreza with a 2.5L engine), along with the clutch master and slave cylinder.
-need a driveshaft from a 90-94 5-speed legacy, either wagon or sedan

Front axles will be the same, rear axles will need to match the new 4.11 diff.
If you find a diff from a 90-94 5-speed non-turbo legacy (wagon or sedan) then you reuse your axles. If the diff comes from a newer car (such as a 97-99 5-speed Legacy with a 2.5 engine), then you use the axles from that car. You really want to get stuff from 90s legacys, for best compatibility.

Post back before you buy diffs or axles and such to confirm they will fit. I'll be glad to help as I'm sure others will.

Hi,
A couple of additional notes;
- The pedal box can be from either a Cable or Hydraulic (aka hydro) NA car. I used a cable pedal box w/a '98 Forester transmission (99% the same as your OB) that was originally a hydro - just move the clutch fork pivot ball to the 'cable' location in the tranny housing. You'll need the bracket mounted to the trans for the cable setup. Unless you have leg issues (which is unlikely if you prefer a 5-speed anyway), the cable setup works fine and the pedal effort increase is minimal - even w/a HD clutch. And it's a helluva lot easier to install, IMHO.

- The rear diff's pinion flange bolt pattern changed around '95-96+. You'll need to change out the pinion flange (not the easiest task) to match the drive line if you get a newer 4.11. All the '90-94 NA 5-speeds were 4.11 FD ratio, AFAIK.

Believe it or not I actually prefer the HD setup. So I cant use the driveshaft from the 98 outback?

No sir. too long...but you could mix and match. Use the front half from a '92-94 and the back half from your OB so you don't have to swap the pinion flange but I didn't actually do this on my 5-speed swap, so do so @ your own risk! ( The '90-91 were one piece and didn't have the separate sections.)

Sorry to ask so many questions, but could I get the rear diff and driveshaft from a 90-94 5 speed legacy and just slap that in instead of using the 98 outback rear diff? Then I wouldn't need to change my rear axles or bother trying to mix/match a driveshaft and rear diff flange combo.

So basically can I use...

98 outback 5 speed >to> 90-94 driveshaft >to> 90-94 4.11 rear diff?

You got it! 90-94 5-speed Legacy diff and driveshaft will work.

Remember the Turbo 5-speeds (and AT's) are 3.90, so not going to work. Also, make sure you keep the parts from the original speedo sensor @ the tranny. The OB is electronic, old school is mechanical. Just swap the old into the new put in your cable and you're good to go.

Ok cool! And ill have to check in the morning to make sure the firewall has the punch out for the hyrdo setup. Hard part will be finding the 90-94 rear diff amd driveshaft.

The only 4wd Legacy to not use the 4.111 final drive is the Turbo version, it used the 3.9, so as long as you can find an AWD legacy N/A you're fine.

I happen to have a complete drive shaft from a 90 legacy if you're having trouble sourcing all the pieces you need for the drive shaft.

95-96+ is going to be your trouble years as stated above, the flange is different at the diff. You can mix and match the second half of the drive shaft tho.

Well I have the diff from my 98 outback parts car, if a 95 and up 5 speed driveshaft will fit then Ill just do that so I dont have to spend more money on a diff and what not.

Theoretically it should work like this:

98 outback trans - to - 95-99 driveshaft - to - 98 outback rear diff and rear axles

This isn't completely accurate. The 92-94 non-turbos also got the 3.90 final drive ratio.
