So I developed a leaking gas tank. When the tank was full I came out to find a puddle under the passenger side of the gas tank. It look like it hand all leaked down from the top. I went out and drove it for a bit to burn off some fuel thinking that it was possibly the filler neck, and the leak and the fumes went away.
What are the suggestions in getting this fixed? I've heard of the bar of soap idea and different kinds of putty. Has anyone ever removed their gas tank before? How difficult is it to do? What are the gotchas?

Re: Leaking Gas Tank
First off, Before you try which ever methods you heard of you should take a look at each of the hoses to the fuel tank.
Your signature says you have a Sedan, so I'll give instructions off of that.
In your trunk under the carpet are 2 access plates. On the drivers side it's round and on the passenger side it's oval-ish. There's Phillips screws on each of these plates. When you pull these plates you have access to the fuel lines that go to and from the fuel tank.
I would check them out before you jump on pulling the tank. That's a big process and makes a person very unhappy.
I would also like to include that it's easier to do all of this if the back seats are folded down and the trunk carpet is removed completely.

Re: Leaking Gas Tank
The other thing to check is the fuel filler pipe (it's common for these to rust out) and the hose connecting it to the tank.

this is true I replaced a filler neck on a 95 wagon a month or so agoLegacy777 wrote:The other thing to check is the fuel filler pipe (it's common for these to rust out) and the hose connecting it to the tank.
when u look under the passenger rear of the car youll see the filler neck , remove the plastic shield first and inspect the neck it self. if there is any built up rust on the neck I would replace it. when u fill up some of the gas sits in the neck and seeps rite through the rust
so I would recommend this be your first step

Re: Leaking Gas Tank
Dropping the tank is a pretty big pain, you have to drop the whole rear subframe and knuckles. It was a two day project for me with hand tools.

Re: Leaking Gas Tank
My money is on the filler neck. I didn't know how it disconnected or how you removed it. I'll check that real soon! Thanks!
