So I know I can fix my shifter linkage the right way but heres the problem.... I have dissassembled everything a couple times and the shaft is stuck to the tranny. I haVE TRIED HEAT, PB LUBE, AIR HAMMER, ETC Nothing will get this thing off. A couple questions I have and ghetto slutions are as follows
????????'s
- how hard can I hit the shaft before i will break tranny prts?
- I have welded the parts together (poorly with very little prep, they just broke the crppy welds again)
- If I were to cut it off will there be problems fabricating a mount for the new linkage
- has anyone had one that wouldn't come off and what have you done?
- I will be welding it all together, will this put undue strain on my gears since there are no pivot points once its welded?
ghetto answer to problem. Weld it all together as one solid piece super tight but it will probably cause wear on tranny internals anyone that can help me here, i dont want to put a new tranny in just to fix my linkage problems the bolts are rusted through and one solid piece otherwise i would take them off. also i cant fit a wrenche in there to get it back together while the shaft is connected. thanks

Re: Ghetto shifter fix???
So are the cotter pins stuck or the bracket itself? If it's the bracket I would use a die grinder or dremel and very carefully split the bracket until you can get it off. I had to do this with a tie rod end on my Impreza.

I don't know if I'd recommend welding it. The joint doesn't need much flexibility, but if you weld it it may bind and not provide the best shifting feel.

Re: Ghetto shifter fix???
The two shafts are fused, i started with a dremel but stopped when i realized i would never be able to get in to the other side. That is helpful though thanks for the pics. It felt pretty stiff the first time I tacked it and was worried it would be torqing the input shaft too much. The feel wasn't too bad just totally the opposite of the sloppy feel. I am just worried too much banging on the input shaft may damage something internally.. I will properly weld it soon and go with it i guess. Even if i were to get a chunk of the linkage shaft off by cutting it would take quite a bit of force to get the thing off which is what i was worried about in the first place. I will give it a try and report back because the welding thing may be a very easy fix if it works and would probably save alot of people a headache. thanks
Re: Ghetto shifter fix???
If you can notch a section out that may give you enough area to get a chisel in there. Either way, whatever you decide to keep us posted.
