Need information on franken-engine
ok so i'm thinking about doing the ej25 shortblock with 22e heads build... been doing a ton of reading on this but i still have some questions. first, is the only thing that changes the shortblock? like everything else from the 22e would bolt back on. and maybe it doesnt matter, but which 2.5l engine... as in ej251, ej25d, etc. or what years. and i may have read this somewhere, but would you use the 22e head gaskets with this setup? thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to the forum!
If you reuse your heads then you can swap everything over to the franken engine. Intake, electronics, timimg gear, etc. Any EJ series shortblock will fit. You use a head gasket designed for the new shortblock. I would personally use the newest, lowest mileage shortblock you could find.

thanks that makes sense. i have a 91 legacy sedan fwd 4speed auto
Re: Need information on franken-engine
got another question... does anybody know approximately how much hp an engine like this will put out? and will the factory 4eat take the torque?
Re: Need information on franken-engine
People say 185 crank hp range, I'm skeptical because of how crap the ej22e heads are. Watch out for which head gasket you use, there is only one on the market that I'm aware of that won't almost completely block the coolant passages on the heads.

The 4eat should have no problem with this engine. There are people running the ea81 4spd 4wd trans behind this motor with cams. Of course it all depends on how healthy your transmission is to begin with.

Re: Need information on franken-engine
somebody said use head gasket for whatever block you use... are you saying i need something else? sorry i'm a bit of a noob
Re: Need information on franken-engine
Yes, I am. The ej22e has a very unique coolant port design, you will need a gasket that matched the bore or the block and the coolant port of the head. The picture I posted has the cometic gasket number you'll need for this application. You'll need to decide a thickness for the gasket depending on which ej25 block you get.
Re: Need information on franken-engine
Hey! thanks for your response so far. I checked out the heads i'm using, and it's like you said. oem gaskets dont look like they'll work, but the picture you posted is perfect. here's the problem: i searched, but i can't find that part number gasket anywhere.. and i cant figure out what thickness i need. a little help please someone?! Thanks
Re: Need information on franken-engine

Partial part number is there in the picture, you can search for it. There will numbers at the end of it to signify thickness.
Re: Need information on franken-engine
Ok i called cometic and ordered the gaskets .040 thick. I'm hoping that is correct! If everything goes well i should have the engine pretty well finished next Saturday...

What ej25 shortblock are you using?
Re: Need information on franken-engine
I forget which year, but it's an ej251 from an outback. From what i understand i can use a thin hg on this one?

Re: Need information on franken-engine
Yeah you can, that's why I was asking which you went with. You also made a good choice on the thickness, in my opinion, your compression ratio will be a healthy 11.1:1
Re: Need information on franken-engine
Awesome, and i appreciate the feedback! I plan to have this thing together sometime this weekend, and if all goes well I'll post a quick update for anyone who's following
