Ciper has permission to hit me with a claw hammer

Post by camshaftprelube »

Seeing how I blew up the EJ22 in the back of my beetle without even trying.

I had just blown a spiderweb (this project has taken me a while) out of the MAF sensor housing and I was excited that I may have found the problem of why this engine wouldn't rev over 3000 rpm. That was it all right. My Father and best friend Robby watched as I grabbed the throttle and revved her up a few times. BWAAA! BWAAA! BWAAAKNOCKknockknock.
SQUEEEK knockknockknockknock.

I uttered a few obscenities.

So I will be off soon to Circle Auto Recycling, where you can pull any engine from about 1000 different cars and only pay $100. There are about 4 legacies out there languishing, either partially smashed or in different stages of disassembly. One of these victims of abuse or mishap should net me a longblock with hopefully less than 150k and a potential run time of greater than 1/2 an hour.

I have no idea what happened to the first engine. It had plenty of lifter noise on one cylinder, though.

so it just blew??

that's definitely not like an EJ22 motor.....unless something was very wrong with it before, or something was setup very improperly

Jeez, that sucks.... :(

I agree with Josh; you probably got a dud of a motor to begin with, or it was somehow damaged while it was transported or installed...

If you have a chance, tear it apart to find out what happened. It'll make the learning experience complete.

Good luck pulling another.

I am the self-proclaimed Master of blowing up indestructable engines without trying. This includes a slant-six, I was just cruising when it holed #5 piston.

This engine had something like 214k on it when i got it. I started it when I pulled it, it ran good, a little valve noise.

When I initially got it running, it still had the valve noise, and it never went away. No oil pressure, maybe?

Possibly the oil pan mod could have been a culprit. Maybe some unidentified trash or welding slag or something broke free and went for a ride. Maybe whoever had it last thrashed the tar out of it.

Well, better in the garage than on the interstate or at some event. Still sucks ass, though. I'm tentatively scheduling the trip to Circle this sunday. Hey, at least the wiring is correct.

Which end of the claw hammer?
At least the work of getting the engine to fit is completed, it shouldn't be too hard just to swap a new block in. Is it possible to do a compression test and figure out where the problem is? You should take the heads off and try to find the problem so if it was caused by you it can be prevented the second time.

Are you sure that the engine is dead? What if all the hyrdolic lifters have drained out (LOUD knocking) and the water pump is dry (squeeking). I had a GL-10 turbo that sound like it was going to blow up every time it was started after sitting for a week or two.

It was running pretty smoothly before "the event". You can put your hand on it and feel something getting beaten apart in there. Sounds like hellacious rod knock. And there is bearing metal in the oil.

It's settled, I'm getting a long block Sunday. I'll keep this one around. There's no point in getting rid of it if it proves to be rebuildable. That way I'll keep my dirty mitts off of your engines. :)

I got another engine Saturday. $137 for a 149K EJ22 from a car that got mauled in the ass. I had it pulled in 2.25 hours, working by my self. The engine collapsed a wheelbarrow which I had to wrestle almost 1/4 mile back to the counter. Then I had to lift the engine into the back of my truck by myself. This is why my projects take so long. When I'm struggling the most, no one is helping me. Except for a select few that straightened out my wiring.
