Speedometer Failure please help!

Post by SubaruLegacy43 »

Yesterday in my 92 Auto LS AWD sedan, the CEL came on and speedo stopped working and so did the odometer. The first thing i tried was the speedo cable. that was fine. i even hooked a drill to it and the speed rose. I pulled codes 24 (air control valve) and 33 (Vehicle speed sensor). Prior to the speedo not operating, there was no CEL on. The car has entered limp mode i believe. The fans are always running peak speed and it will short shift each gear. Thank you so much for helping me out on this guys!!

Pull the 'sensor' (can't recall the correct name) where it goes into the trans and verify it's all good...as well as the 'tab' on the end of the cable ...they are a common part that breaks.

Hey thanks a lot. Would this throw on the check engine light? I may have to make a quick trip down to the junkyard tomorrow.

Thank you so much. Pulled that part out and sure enough it was sheared off. Went down to the u pull it yard and grabbed to for free. Everything works with no check engine light! Thanks again!

Yup, that base piece is a common failure point and is cheap from the dealer too.

Make sure to clear your codes so if you have any future issues/codes the old ones don't add to diagnostic confusion.
