Whoa my timing notches are on opposite sides!
Just checked my timing notches and i think I am doing it right but when my cam gears are aligned with the notches, the crank one in the middle points straight down! This may be why I've been missing?
Re: Whoa my timing notches are on opposite sides!
Is this changing the belt, or just checking? If you haven't touched the belt then you need to keep rotating the engine, eventually it will line up or get close. The crank gear doesn't turn the same speed as the can gears.

Re: Whoa my timing notches are on opposite sides!
Subaru cams should turn exactly once for every two turns of the crank. In fact every other engine I've timed was 2:1 although I've heard of 3:1 or otherwise.

Remember - it's NOT the arrow on the crank sprocket - it's the notch on the tooth on the BACK of the sprocket...covered on just about every Subaru site online if you want a pic.

I'm at the laundrymat so I can't look now but I think I told all the stuff off with the crank sprocket with the up point.. The cam gears had white marks which were not the marks but not the hash marks.. I took off all the pulleys and things but stopped from getting the heads off because I need to jack the engine up.. Did I mess it up??? :'<
Re: Whoa my timing notches are on opposite sides!
No, just line the marks up when you put the belt on, your good.

Okay thanks!

Re: Whoa my timing notches are on opposite sides!
The beauty of non interference engines. Its a little more nerve-wracking if you do that on DOHC heads
