Ej22t oil pressure spike 148psi

Post by sleepinsuby »

So my built 93 ej22t now gets major oil pressure spikes on start up. Car ran great for maybe 1000miles now every start up I blow the oil filter off. Motor has aftermarket oil pump for ej22t (new) the heads where rebuilt 3 angle valve grind and delta street/strip cams (220grind iirc). Iv read that the aftermarket oil pressure relief springs can be to hard and not release when needed hence the major spike in oil press. Trying to explain what spring I need to my local Subaru dealer is like talking to a wall. Why they hire idiots there that have no clue on cars is beyond me. Anyway I'm looking for a factory oil pressure relief spring to hopefully solve this spike issue anyone knows part # for this spring? Also I have a ej22 motor sitting and a ej20h sitting anyone know if any of the opr springs from them will work? I think the 22 na spring is to light for the oil squirter application but I'm in the air about the ej20h (twin turbo) spring. Any help is appreciated.

What "aftermarket" oil pump are you running? Is it the pump meant for the ej22t engine, but just not a Subaru pump?

The part # for the ej22t oil pump relief spring is 15020AA060.

I know the ej22 spring is different, however I'm not sure about the ej20h.

BTW, how are you blowing your oil filter off?

It's a factory pump rebuilt/modded. Iv been searching threw all my papers trying to find where I bought it. It's a ej22t pump. Hole issue is when the starting the car the oil pressure will raise as it should but doesnt stop. At around 80psi it starts to raise a lil faster till around 150psi and it will blow the o-ring on the oil filter and dump around 2qts +/- on the ground. Like there's no relief. I need to pull it apart and look maybe something is sticking with the relief valve.

Yeah, I would recommend pulling the relief valve out and check to make sure it's working properly.

Ok after many attempts I can't get the plunger out of the oil pressure bypass out. Even put my timing belt back on and tryed starting the car with the cap and spring out and still see 140-150psi and the plunger didn't move. Guess I'll be putting a oil pump in the car. Sucks this one has less than 1000 miles on it.

That's too bad. Have you tried tapping on the back side of the plunger to see if you can dislodge it?

Ok so got the oil pump off the motor. Bent a bolt a couple times and got the plunger out man lots of crap on it. Cleaned the housing up with some gun cleaner brushes and solvent. Stuck a 22na plunger I had in and put the shim in. Got it all back together and she's peering like a kitten at 15-20psi at idle and 75-80 on start up. Thank god
