Would you...
Trade your legacy for a 99 VW beetle, 2.0 nonturbo, automatic?
a straight across trade, but you have to drive the beetle for at least 6 months

For something like a 99 GTI, maybe, especially if i had a non-turbo car.
A Beetle, lets face it, is a "chick" car, so take that how you will. It's a lot newer, but it's still a VW, a beetle, non-turbo and automatic.
It's got flower holders too, geez.

if i can sell it after 6 months, absolutely, i have the other car. after 6, off to craigslist it goes! I would get a gc8 2.5rs i think.
otherwise, no way, my 14 year old subaru is as reliable as a new beatle. How can anyone buy a car where burning oil is "normal?" VW's are crappo. And don't get me started on the styling or target market...

hell no, as much as i love vw I wouldn't give up all the perks of my car for one. It seems they are harder to work on aswell. A friend of mine has/had one and one of his lights went out so he was going to change it, and it turns out he had to remove a bunch of crap just to get to the headlight. No thanks to that.

Your mother offer it to you in exchange for Ruby? lol
I'd say "no" personally. . . unless she never plans on getting rid of Ruby and wants to do some work on her for driving herself. Then I'd have to think about it.
I'm guessing she's having second thoughts about trading-in the Beetle at the Subbie dealership. . . . right?

From my perspective, I think I'd have to have a car with similar if not better, performance characteristics (or potential) as my current car. The beetle (in normally aspirated form, anyways) does not have this potential.

Would I rather have a VW beetle over a Legacy Wagon? No. Would this deal be a good idea? Maybe.
This is just hypthetical:
If Ruby has lets say 180K miles with a $1,200 blue book and the VW has 60K miles and a $7,000 blue book and you can sell it after six months I would think long and hard about it. Think ahead. You might hate the VW but six months and then you could have 5-6 times the trade in value of Ruby to go towards a new Legacy GT wagon or something
. Or you could then get another BF and have a lot more cash to put into mods.
Now if the VW isn't worth considerable more money I wouldn't even consider it.
Just my .02

If it was me, with my unbelievable commute from hell (I drive around the earth at the equator every three months! Just my commute) And I would take it in a flash if it was a TDI. I would save so much money, maybe run biodiesel, or convert it to run straight veg oil. And then since I would have traded the leg turbo for that, i would maybe turbo the GT or something...

no. i would not trade my car for the beetle. never. it was not proposed, my mom knows i'd go to hell and back for ruby. I just thought i'd pick the car that i hate the most in the world, and see if you guys would trade. it took me the better part of 2 hours to change the oil in it due to the placement of the oil filter. no way in hell.

It's easy to forget how much working on other cars sucks...
My brother needs to get the 6-month old 87 octane fuel out of his MkII Supra's fuel tank. Apparently you can't siphon it out because there are baffles. So I said he should just disconnect the rubber feed line from his fuel filter and let the fuel pump dump it all out into a bucket. Well apparently he can't reach it unless he removes the intake plenum. So I said to disconnect the line at the pump. It seems he has to drop his fuel tank to access the pump.
It's like the issue that nobody brings up when they compare cars like the WRX STi and the Lancer Evolution. Irrespective of small or subjective differences in performance, I'd want a car that's as easily serviced as a Subaru.

My mechanic and I had the same conversation that Consumer Reports and all those other BS ratings rags should include serviceability and parts pricing. That way my mechanic wouldn't have to get frustrated working on American cars or 'Eurotrash' because not as many people would buy them. Although a lot of Japanese cars are little better. I told my mother I'd change her oil for her while I was doing mine... took an hour and I had to jack her car up to reach the filter blind.

Have you actually driven the "99 VW beetle, 2.0 nonturbo, automatic" you mention? I dont mean at 25 miles an hour around the coner but the type of driving you normally do? I have driven both non turbo and turbo beetles which have had some miles and I wasnt impressed at all. I also hate its half assed attempt at four seats. Im only 5 10 and I constantly hit my head while sitting in the rear. Many more complaints but you can see where Im going.

if at 30 mph, if you move the steering wheel about 1-2" from left to right real quick, you can make it shake so violently, it will spill a soda. keeps going straight, just massive amounts of body roll. I hate that car so much. the rear "seat" is more of a shelf, the dash is big enough to have a 4 course meal on(i've actually done homework on it) and the car is poop. the only reason it's the safest car in it's class is when it flips, it just rolls back over teeter-totter style. the transmission has at least .5 second hesitation, and the engine sound does nothing for me. The interior is already falling apart, and we've gotten a recall notice stating a misoperation of the brake light, where they'll randomly light up, or stop working completely. I could go on...

and within 2 days of filling it, it's empty, you know where that water goes? on the windows!!!
Every beetle i've seen with something other than a pen in the bud vase has had either a dead flower or a silk flower.
I will admit, I talked my mom into getting the car, when i was 12, and thought it would be cool. Yes, It was a stupid idea, but they were all the rage.
