which side controls the gauge on the dash left side or pump side

Both, it reads the resistance from both sides. You can test both sending units with a ohm gauge and see if only one or both are bad. Easley tested when there removed.

good cus my gauge is stuck at 3/4 when i turn the car off but reads full when running i'll try to order both sides

Yeah, I had issues a couple years back, replaced the main sending unit on the passenger side....it helped for a while, and then still had issues. I had to replace the passenger side as well for the gauge to start working properly again.

i think i may need to replace both i cleaned the contacts didnt help. so i'll do both sending units and upgrade my fuel pump

Yeah....that's probably the best thing to do.
