No Fuel, No Spark, No Start.

Post by freefall »

Was hoping for some help here i am pretty much at a loss...
I have a legacy SS and over the last few weeks my legacy would randomly shut off every once in a while. It would usually start right back up but a few times it was about 5 mins later. then just recently i drove it to work (with no issues) but after returning to my car to go home it simply refused to start. It will crank all day long but not even attempt to fire. So here is what i have already done:
~Checked spark by pulling a plug and cranking it, as well as taking my volt meter to the plug wire and saw no current at all.
~Checked fuel by using to volt meter to see if the fuel pump was getting power as well as pulling a fuel line in the engine bay and cranking. when you turn the key to on power is sent to the pump briefly but then no power during cranking.
~Checked all grounds fuses connections and vacuum lines etc.
~Replaced crankshaft position sensor and checked wiring to the camshaft position sensor.
The camshaft position sensor's resistance was in spec but i suppose it could still be bad as well.

And that is where i am at. The camshaft sensor has a tiny dent in it so that is next on my list. after that maybe a tooth behind the timing belt pulley for the crankshaft sensor to read broke off? Not sure... also things of note:
~black plugs to read ecu codes do not work on my car, I can only pull codes by using the green dealer plugs and driving around.
~car has 306k miles
When the green plugs are connected everything clicks and functions as it should. the ECU seems to be capable of doing its job. Are there any other things that would cause no fuel/spark other than the cam/crankshaft sensors?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post but i wanted to give as much info as possible so i dont waste your time or mine.

What's your location? The ecu has an ECU Pin called Jurisdiction ID. B56.11 is the pin number I wanna say that's something to do with california? Maybe not, anyways I remember not being able to pull codes when that wire was connected to the ECU, or maybe I had problems resetting the ecu etc etc...

That's just a thought.

Have you checked your relay? Have you inspected the fuel pump plug? They burn out often, or at least it's been a common problem with a lot of the first gen legacys.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting about the pin on the ecu. Im located in Hawaii so it very well could have been from California originally. If i could get the black connecters to work that would really help me out. And i have inspected the relays and fuel pump wiring. It had burned out before but looks like the previous owner soldered it properly and the connection checked out with my volt meter.

Hi,
The issue w/it dying sounds MAF-related.

Unplug the MAF and see if it'll start....I know some years of Subaru will @ least start - but not run well - w/it disconnected.

I was thinking maf related too at first, but would that cause no fuel or spark? I have tried cranking with maf unplugged and still didn't start. I ordered a camshaft sensor and will be installing that next.

That's a good point...MAF probably not indicated if no fuel/spark. Sounds like something's getting 'hot' and causing an electrical issue - like a bad capacitor would do...hopefully not the ECU, but do you have a spare?

Yeah, it sounds crank or camshaft sensor related.

Have you checked the crank & camshaft sensor wiring back to the ECU to make sure it's good?

Regarding checking the codes, try manually grounding the read memory pin on the ECU and see if the codes come up. It's ECU connector B56 pin 12.

Here's the ECU I/O if you don't have it.
