rear wiper install

Post by THAWA »

Just throwing some ideas around in my head, I thought it would be kinda nice to have a rear wiper. When it rains/sprinkles my rear vision is pretty poor and the defrost doesn nothing for water drops, plus the wagons have it so why cant I? :) Anyway, I saw some BC liberties with them and it appears to go through the rear window. First of all are the BC and BF rear windows the same size, I would think not but you never know. Next would it be possible to get a wiper from a BF have someone drill a hole in either the glass or the trunklid area and just place it there. If not looks like i'd have to import a BC wiper/rear window combo, bleh. As far as the electronics of it, could I have it hooked up so that when the front wipers go the rear one goes aswell. Like if the switch is set to low all would be at low speed, high all high, and inter, all would be at the same speed?

again just ideas I'm throwing around.

I was thinking about this too... In Japan BCs had rear wipers (as did GCs).

The rear window is different between BCs and BFs, so you'd have to modify a BC rear window. I don't know anything about whether or not it's feasible to drill through automotive glass. Some people tell me it'll shatter into a million pieces immediately; others say you can do it if you bore through the glass with something like a wooden dowel instead of drilling.

I was thinking I'd get the wiper assembly off a BF, and also take the combination switch from the steering column to control it.

I don't think the rear wiper motor is designed to go multiple speeds or even intermittently... but someone with a BF should confirm or refute that.

or even perhaps the rear wiper assembly from a newer subaru ie outback/forester i know the forester has intermitten (only 1 setting) and is capable of continous running albeit a low speed.

id love a rear wiper too, although the work/money involved makes it highly doubtful.

I'm not sure how the laminate on the safety glass or the curvature would affect it, but there are glass drill bits. However, I know with cutting glass, its best to do it under water as it prevents it from shattering. When they chop tops off cars and cut down the windshields, a common less risky method is to sand blast the area no longer wanted and mask off the rest - you may be able to get someone to try this, but it would seem you'd need to remove the window.

it is impossible to drill tempered glass, i have been looking into this for some time now and spoken to many different sources, all of whom have said it cant be done. the two solutions are a)get the glass and wiper assembly from japan or b)have custom glass made (i have a source but its expensive) and modify the bf wiper assembly. i think the cheaper route would be to source one from japan, which is what i plan on doing. if there is enough interest we could do a group buy however.

What are the chances of a roughly 6'x3' piece of glass surviving a trip around the world?

multiply that by however many people would like this and i think you have one fun equation for losing an assload of money. I do believe it would be a hell of a lot cheaper, in the long run, to have the glass custom made, but then again i dont really know how much glass is.

I would love a rear wiper.

Going from having a wagon with one to the legacy that doesn't. Rear visiblilty was bad at first.

I coated the rear in rain-x and it helps quite a bit for water, snow and ice however is a different storey

I don't know about the whole "you can't drill through glass" thing guys. When I had a hands free cell phone setup put into my E-350 utility work van they installed the antenna through the top of the front glass. I don't know exactly how they did it but it sure looked like they drilled it.

I know there's a way, but I'm not sure how. I would guess an abrasive. Like I posted about sandblasting, though I think it would too small an area for concentrated sand blasting, but there must be something similar that would work - a special grinding drill bit, perhaps. I wish I still knew some glass people from school to ask as this would be great if all you had to get was the rear wiper assembly from an overseas JY...

It would be a nice yet subtle non-rice attention getter, too.

Matt - Most cell phone antennas that attach to glass actually don't need you to drill through it; it just attaches to either side of the glass.

Steve - Yeah, like I said, some people say you can bore through the glass by sticking a wooden dowel into a drill and pushing very gently and slowly through the glass.

Maybe if someone has a parts car with bad glass or that they don't plan on using that they could try different technoques out on. I suppose I've got a wagon, so it doesn't effect me, but it would be cool to figure this out in case someday I end with a sedan.
