did i FRY my Rob Tune ECU?

Post by turbo wagon »

I have recently completed my EJ22T swap into my 93 legacy wagon and I have put about 200 miles on the car. I have a Rob tune ECU with the 4 to 2 converter. wow I love to drive this thing. A week ago the air fuel ratio was becoming increasingly inconsistent and running rich. I put the grey top injectors in during the swap and thought I had the fitting wrong or a o ring went for the reason for the AFR's being weird. I pulled the injectors and checked the o rings (I used the method from this site for fitting the injectors on the turbo fuel rails). Then turned the car on and it was running very rich the afr just flashed 20. Turned the car off and checked the injectors again and tried to start the car but it just turned over and didn't start. I went through the entire no start process twice checked the continuity of all the wires needed for the 4 to 2 ignition and the ecu swap.
This is what I found:
1. the check engine light does not come on when the key is in the on position
2. I can't get the black or green D check wires to show a engine code or run through the relays
3. the fuel pump does not come on, but I can make the fuel pump work by grounding the pin at the ecu for the relay
4. no spark
5. 11.5 volts to the ecu at the positive connections
6. low to no resistance on the grounding pin outs at the ecu
7. power to the coil

I am at a loss. this is either a coincidence with me pulling the injectors and the no start for the engine or I did something while I pulled and put them back in.

Is there a way to see if the ecu got fried?

Hi,

Not my expertise, but 11.5V sounds low. Is there over 12.5 @ the battery?

If it's NOT a power issue, You can swap in your EJ22T ECU -if avl. - and the car should start w/both the 4-2 converter and 450's. You'll get a code for the MAP (rewired), MAF (wrong type) and maybe your BCS (depending on whether yours has been disconnected) = but it should start.

There are 2 fuses in the inside fuse panel (bottom left 2) that can sometimes make the car not start. Mine does every so often. Put the key to the on postion and and move the fuses to try and make sure they are getting contact. Also check them to make sure they are bad.

thanks for all the support.

I checked all of the power connections to the ECU including the fuses, checked the grounds from the ecu pin outs, and then tried the old turbo ECU...

The old ECU did the same thing and acted like the Rob Tune ECU I thought I fried...

I then remembered that I could jump the fuel pump relay from the negative pin out at the ECU and it dawned on me that I was providing a good ground and the fuel pump worked..

So I went back and checked all of the grounds again and I had missed one the last two times I went through the no start procedures. It was the ground that comes off the intake wiring harness and attaches next to the fuel rail.

It was loose. I tightened it up and the car started!!!!

So that ground was good enough for the multi meter to have continuity for the ground but not good enough to run the ECU.

So in the future if your ECU is acting funny check that ground connection coming off the intake harness.

Thanks for the help

Yup....that is the primary ECU ground point. That needs to be good.
