Blew a rod in my 91 legacy ss
I found out i blew the rod on my 91 legacy ss and now i need to buy a new engine block or engine. Are there any subaru engine blocks that can be used instead of an ej22t engine block in an ej22t engine? and if not, where is the best place to buy a subaru engine block/ full engine?

HI,
what's your budget?
Many people on here are running the EJ20G from the '92-'96ish WRX. Buy 'em off ebay or other JDM importer. It's not a direct swap, so do some reSEARCH on here.
Subaru no longer sells the EJ22T as a new shortblock, so you'll be looking for a used block on here or elsewhere.
If you're running stock boost or so, you can use an EJ22e short block w/your heads. The crank and rods are forged like the EJ22T. Pistons are not coated like the EJ22T's and it doesn't have the piston oil squirters, but there are a few threads on here about running them - w/out issue. Reddevil made muliple 300-400HP engines w/the EJ22e block. EDIT: Running the EJ22e/EJ22T combo RAISES the compression ratio - a lot - do some more research on this option.
If you want to spend some $$ you could upgrade to an EJ257 shortblock, EJ25D heads/IM, Robtune and be close to 300/300 w/a bigger turbo - probably for less than $3000 - if you do the work.

Re: Blew a rod in my 91 legacy ss
I was thinking of an eg20g engine, could I run anej20g block with the rest of the engine from an ej22t? And I heard that if you use an ej22 block (even with stock turbo) you could blow the engine and that it wouldnt work because the ej22t is much beefier

Yes, you could just use the EJ20G short block. BUT i'm not sure what that does to your compression ratio w/the EJ22T heads. I' sure that's covered on here or NASIOC more than once.
If you run the EJ22e w/the stock heads your compression ratio WILL be higher. I don't think stock boost will blow it, but I have no personal experience (yet) so do some more research.....but the ECU may not be able to compensate properly and it may not run very well.
YOU COULD put turbo pistons in the EJ22e, which drops the CR and it'd be safer....I 'think' you can still buy EJ22T pistons new.

Re: Blew a rod in my 91 legacy ss
Take whatever compression ratio the ej20g is and add 0.8 to it for using ej22t heads.
ej22e with 22t heads will be whatever stock compression ratio for the year shortblock you use, 90-96 are 9.5 and 97/98 is 9.7. Don't even consider the 99-01 ej222 as an option, putting 22t/22e heads on them will net you a hefty 11:1 cr.
In my personal opinion you'd be best off getting an ej20g and using it as a complete replacement for your old motor.
