96 Legacy EJ22 into 93 Legacy

Post by Sublimejoe »

I ended up finding another deal on a motor, this time its a running 1996 Legacy EJ22 and Five Speed manual transmission.

I am working on a list of everything and anything I may need to get it working in my car. Instead of texting and emailing a dozen different people I figured I would post here for some insight.

What I know I need:

Engine:

Tranny:
- RHD Pedal Set
Parts Needed:

Manual Cluster
Front & Rear bumper Chrome Trim

Yeah, I figured that I would need to use my intake manifold.

Anything else you can think of? Aside from the intake manifold is there much else that will cause an issue? I plan to use my 93 Harness, or I could get the two merged if thats necessary. Thanks so much!
Moved to here..

'96 is a SINGLE -port exhaust. So you'll also need the y-pipe manifold/header-it bolts up to rest of the exhaust like the dual-port. '90-'96 were the same shortblock, w/the heads having the EGR on the Automatic, different engine wiring harness and I think the TPS is different which is why you'll use the '93 throttle body.

all I can think of ATM.

I typed without thinking, the motor and trans are actually out of a 1996 Impreza. Should be exactly the same right?

I've seen a handful of dual port 96 ej22's, seem to be on the early built models. You may be really lucky, or you may need the exhaust manifold and cat converter section of the exhaust. The manifold and cats are designed different after 95 so just manifold isn't a direct swap to a first gen.

Will need single port exhaust like mentioned. Otherwise just use the intake manifold and all associated sensors with your early EJ22 stuff.

I did the exact same thing with my old Open Light rally car. 1997 Impreza longblock into a 1994 legacy. Ran great! Still running in the hands of the new owners too.

Finally getting around to doing this! How much of my harness will work for this motor? I plan on switching over the intake manifold from my 93

Move the IM WITH THE HARNESS attached and plug it in

Plug the EGR port on the driver's side head, if needed.

Great, so with two nearly complete 93 motors sitting in my garage I should be good on any parts?

I still plan on doing the five speed swap as well, I already have a rhd cable pedal set.
