Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Progress has been slow lately. I'm having some issues figuring out the wiring for the door locks and windows. I may pay iWire to do the front door harnesses. I did get some different springs for my struts as you saw on Facebook Tony.
I'm also in a bit of a bind on the short block. I ordered a set of ACL race bearings, which I should post this in the engine section, and they don't seem to sit in the block right, I ordered thrust #3. Had some concerns, and the seller sent me another set. The second set doesn't sit in there well either.
Basically, the bearing ends are a little higher than the case halves. I don't think they squish down all the way when the block is torqued together.
This is my first go at putting a block together, so maybe I'm over thinking it, who knows. At any rate, when I plastigauge the crank, the tolorences are too small, so I may need a new crank.
If I need a new crank, I'm just gonna buy a 2.0 off nasioc and save this for another day. Or pull the motor out of the 93 and sell the rolling shell. Either way, I want this done before the end of the year.
I sold my 91 this weekend for 2700. I haven't spent a dime of that on my 92 yet, but that's going to change today. However I am down to 900

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
No current progress in the short block as I'm still weighing in options but I did just order some 565 topfeed injectors and I'm picking up a GT28 ball bearing turbo in the morning.
It'll be a nice addition to the build, much better than the TD04 I was going to add.
If everything checks out I'll sell the stock wrx 440s and keep the TD04 for one of my LGTs.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
If the bearing tolerances are too tight, you can have the crank turned or polished to size. I think the bearing shells are supposed to be flush with the case halves. At least that's how it is on bearing caps in a normal motor. How far are they from fitting flush?

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
The clearances are too loose. So either a new crank or no go.
I've been in contact with ACL about how they sit in the case halves and they say everything I have described to them is normal.
As far as sitting flush, .02-.01
I'll mic both sets on the halves but it won't be torqued down.
Edit, not necessarily a no go. I just need to machine the crank and get oversized bearings. But ideally I'd just like to get a new crank.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Biting the bullet on an idea based on some research I've done over on nasioc. Temporarily throwing in an ej22e. It's been done before. One thread I read, the guy pulled 2-3 degrees of timing at first to get a relatively sweet spot in the tune.
My tuner has been pretty helpful, hence the turbo and the great deal, and pointed me in the right direction on injectors since I want a conservative tune to start with. I was going to buy some 650s to start off with, but in due time. This car is going to be so much fun if I ever finish it.
Here's a pic of the AVO GT28 next to a TD04

Essentially it's a Larger compressor on a TD04 turbine shaft. It spools super quick. He took me for a ride in his forester a couple months ago when this was on it. It sounds pretty cool, being BB and all. I'll get some more photos of it later this afternoon. I was pretty busy yesterday.
I have my eyes on an ej22e at pick n pull that has 147k on it. oil looked clean, car was smashed up a bit. I'm going to try to pull it this weekend after I pay some bills and see what I have to work with. All in all, my attitude about this project is I'm going to drive this before the end of the year, and it will happen.
Also have some suspension sex. Found some pinks on craigslist. I already had the 5x100 red struts and stock STI springs. He just wanted to trade springs straight across. I could never pass that up. I even offered to add cash on top and he declined. However I did fill his tank for making the 160 mile round trip for delivering them. Guy had a pretty nice 04-05 STI on some volks. Has S-Techs on his struts and he didn't like how it rode. Older fellow, really nice guy tho.

Tony, Any specific angles you want? It's just a piece of sheet metal I cut some lines in and folded them down, then thru some left over carbon vinyl on.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Let us know how it ride on the pinks.
My wagon was bouncy (under-damped) on stock STi struts and springs. I would think the pinks would be even worse.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Got the suspension all back together and rolled the car out of the garage. Pretty busy day yesterday. Oil change and plug wires on the black GT and swapping wheels beck and forth. That gets exhausting...
Anyways, I'm going back and forth with engine ideas. After some long discussions over dinner and a few drinks, we all decided since no one is biting on the white 93, why not sell the rolling shell and I take my time with the case halves in the garage. If I buy a new crank for it, then I'm going to get pistons as well.
I'll get started on the engine soon.
I forgot to re-seal my sunroof tho, packing tape ftw!

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
I've been busy as hell with work and other personal stuff. It's been pretty hectic.
Got my poor man's manual seat belts ready to install from a 2nd gen.
Got my 98 GT wagon a short block to replace the bad 2.5.
The GT is first on the list because I have a method to my madness. I will explain more later...

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
They sure are. It's nice having a 98 GT sedan and a 98 GT wagon. The 95 wagon is just a donor short block to replace the bad 2.5 bottom end for the 98 wagon so I can have a solid daily while I finish my swap.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Cometic gaskets came in this week. Motor from the 93 is coming out tomorrow (later today, it's 1 a.m.) Already have most of the seals for the engine.
Still need valve cover bolts, wideband, boost, and oil pressure gauge. Figure out the door harnesses, bleed brakes, find O2 sensors, and solve my power steering pump dilemma... Thinking about a triple gauge dash pod for the dash. May have a buyer for the 93 shell.
Damn I hope this all works out....

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Been getting some stuff done
Started cleaning the donor 22t couple days ago. Still have some cleaning to do on the deck surfaces, that'll get done this week. Almost ready to put the heads on.
I've had some misc stuff in my garage that needed to get used, so it's all going on this engine for now. Here's an example;
Oil pans.
Left is WRX Right is Legacy Turbo

The wrx pan has an extra plate in there. I'm assuming it's there to prevent oil sloshing around in there. Either way it seemed like a good idea to use it. The legacy turbo pan I pulled off did not have it and also had a dent in the bottom of the pan. I assume someone before I owned the car thought the oil pan was a good place to use as a jack point.
Closer image of the extra plate in the oil pan.

I decided not to do anything with this water pump since I put it on shortly after I got the white 93ss.

Deck surfaces as they are currently

Oil pick up pipes. I was going to use the WRX pickup (right) but the Legacy pickup (left) had an extra mounting point, so I figured that'd be a little bit more solid.

Factory oil cooler. The legacy Turbo oil cooler (left) has a U shaped hose that is quite hard to come across these days and I happen to have the newer WRX (right) cooler. I am more comfortable with the 90 bend for the outlet versus the U shape on the Legacy Turbo cooler. Plus hoses are still available. I also happened to have a few new OEM hoses, so I used those.

All cleaned and installed!

My workbench is an organized mess.....

Newer WRX oil pump getting used. It has about 50k less miles than the Legacy Turbo pump, so why not. It came from a running motor so I know it's good. Also has the timing belt guide mounting holes. Checked the #3 Phillips screws to make sure they're nice and tight and applied some sealant, installed, and put a new OEM crank seal in. New Oring as well.

I haven't put the oil pan on yet because I'm not done cleaning the deck surfaces, I want them more shiny! With the pan off, this will allow me to blow any crap out that may get in there from cleaning. I ran out of brake parts cleaner so I'll have to go buy some more today.
I've been waiting a year to start this...

I used a 2x4 wrapped in 220 to clean mine on the metro 20k miles ago when I replaced th be ad. Worked great. Make sure it's long enough to cover the whole surface so it sands evenly.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
When I rebuilt my ej22t, I got a new oil pan and it had the additional baffle in the bottom. I had to modify the baffle to get the pick up to sit right. Here are some pics of that.

If I have to swap on the wrx pickup, I will.

Re: CJ's Prefaced 92 SS build...
Like you, I think the older style pickup is better since it is supported. Due to it being supported there is less chance of it cracking at the braze points IMO. So I'd try and use the older style pickup if you can....even if it means bending some metal on the baffles.
