EGT Gauge, Pyrometer Probe location??
So now that i'm finally putting on some mods i bought a while back, i want to get my Exhaust Gas Temp Gauge mounted in my A pillar, and get the probe mounted.
I've read about both places to put it, Up-pipe, and the Downpipe... and ive heard that if you place it in the up-pipe, you'll get a great reading, but if something lets go, there goes your turbo... then people say that in the downpipe, you dont get a true reading...
i'll have to take either piece down to "my" muffler shop (Minute Muffler in Dublin, Ca) and they'll weld in a bung for the probe... but where oh where shall i mount it????

You need to mount it in the headers. Anywhere else really isn't going to do you any good.
There's a spot on the passenger header where you can drill & tap. You can kind of see the spot in this pic

Second that- it is where mine is. The EGT is supposed to measure the gas right out of the exhaust port. The further down you put it, the less accurate your reading is.Legacy777 wrote:You need to mount it in the headers. Anywhere else really isn't going to do you any good.

Personally, I'd put in on the #4 manifold. Most EJ22T failures I've seen lately have been #4, not #3 even though that is the fabled hot spot because of the turbo. #4 doesn't get as much coolant flow for some reason which is why they tend to go "pop".scuzzy wrote:and #3 (right at that spot I believe) runs hottest AFAIK.

I agree. I've lost two turbo engines because the #4 exhaust valves burned.legacy92ej22t wrote:Personally, I'd put in on the #4 manifold. Probably the easiest way to check your engine is pull the spark plugs. The porcelain around the center electrodes on my #4 plugs were super white -- indicative of super hot temps.

Re: EGT Gauge, Pyrometer Probe location??
Bump from the long long ago....
Josh, I am not seeing where in the header you recommend the EGT probe to go. Additionally, any more direction on the location at #4?
