Just changed my tranny fluid and filter

I figured I would change my filter in my 91 legacy. So I went to advanced auto parts to get filter. Well I had to buy two kits because I didn't know what size my pickup was, theres two types. Anyhow the filter I took out of my car was dfferent than the two kits I bought. One was with a pickup one inch long and mine was a half inch long I took out. The other had a real large pickup area but it was basically flush with the filter housing. Well I tried the one with the long pickup and it wouldn't fit cause there was no room to install the tube that goes directly under the filter. I then used the flush mount pickup one and I could then put my tube into the holes it belongs. I reused the thick cork gasket cause I didn't like the thin ones the kit supplied. Anyhow it took 7 and 1/2 quarts to get it where it belongs on the dipstick. The manuals say it takes 4 quarts for a normal filter change. Go figure! Mine is not a turbo legacy either, I guess those trannys take a little more fluid. Also my magnet had about 1 and 1/2 inches of metal shavings stuck on it. Fluid wasnt burnt. Joe in PA.

No reason to replace the "filter" you mention. It doesnt do anything except stop very LARGE particles from curculating. You could have got a complete retrofit kit from the DEALER with external filter (similar to a fuel filter) for 12 dollars....
Now you have to worry about leaks around the pan because you broke the seal.

You should have asked here BEFORE buying the parts.

I see your point. But im still glad that I did what I did for the reason of cleaning the magnet. The magnet now is more efficient in operation. The very outer part of the fine shavings on the magnet could dislodge and go through system get caught and then perhaps dislodge again causing a vicious cycle. I do plan on getting the external filter though.

i had to replace the filter with about 3 tools, outside, no jack, then broke two bolts, because the car suddenly wouldn't run because that very filter got clogged...
