Starting Issue after warm

Post by imtb »

Helllo,

I have issues with starting after driving car for for a while, then if I let it sit for 1-2 hours it has to really turn over quite a few times and then it starts. No problem if sits over night fires right up, just after driving then letting it sit for a couple hours. Not sure what it could be. Cold air intake? I check and listened for vacuum leak and found none.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Could have a leaky injector that leaks down and floods the engine out after a couple hours. If it sits longer, like overnight, does it fire right up normally?

Fires right up after sits over night. It also starts right up after I would go into store and come back out.

I havent notice the smell of gas like it leaking or flodded.

I notice to today if I crack the throttle if fires right off.

I have to crank it after it sits for a couple of hours. i am not sure what is going on.

I havent replaced the coolant sensor, it could be orginal.

Will I loose alot of coolant when I take this out?

Is this a dealer item or O rileys?

Thanks for tips or info.

No, you won't lose much coolant its a small hole. Local part store part is just fine, and the cost should be around 20-25$.

Yeah, I'd suggest starting with the coolant temp sensor.

I replaced the coolant sensor this afternoon pretty easy and didnt loose much coolant. Old one looked semi corroed.

Seems about the same on starting after running to tempature and then sitting to for a couple hours. I check temp with computer and it 130 degress. It has to crank over numerous times before fires and its real lazy when it starts, like it rolls into running, not crisp firing up.

Also with the new coolant sensor the temp gauage is running cooler on the dash gauge and I check it to the computer and its operiating at 192. Old sensor 195. If this means anything.

I don't think it will drastically change anything, but I'd recommend clearing the ECU's memory by pulling the battery cable for about an hour. This will clear the ECU's memory of any long-term fuel trims.

Still having the same problem. Reset computer last night. Drove it to work today fired right up, runs fine. Shut it off went back out 1 hour later and had to crank and rolled to life. I even tried prime fuel pump 3 times. Turn key on hear fuel pump cycle on and off, did this 3 times and same thing. cranks a few times then starts.

I thought I could hear a slight vacuum leak at the catch can, put some sealer on threads, no differnt.

Fuel pressure regulator?

Computer is giving it extra gas in morning when cold, probably when starts fine. Also starts fine after running, shut off and will fire right back up.

Sits for an hour engine temp is 130 and computer not givning extra fuel and harder to start. IAC valve sticking open?
Giving to much air?

It is possible that one of the injectors is leaking, probably the o-ring that seals it to the injector housing.

I might have something.

I am thinking it the coolant by pass I did on the TB and IAC valve. I going hook the coolant hose back up to the IAC and see if this take care of it.

Yes, that might be it. The coolant lines need to be hooked up to the IAC, you can bypass the TB all day long.

1st. today.
Fired up perfect after sitting all night and its 35-40 degress today. Idle rock solid and smooth. Idles up when cold and settles down quick. Once warm revs up and settle right back to base idle immedialty.
Let it sit for 50 minutes pretty cold out today. Went to start it and had to crank about 5-6 times and then fired. Seems better but not like it should.

May swap fuel pressure regulator and see what happens. I am using the one from the 97, I will put the one on from the 92 and see what happens.

I was talking to a co-worker about this issue and he explained how the injectors could be seeping after I turn off the key, dripping gas. I uderstood how he explained it and maybe this is what is going on. I guess I can swap the injectos to the 97's and see what happens.

I didnt really understand how they could leak, but I do now and thanks for your response.

It does fire right up after sitting over night.

I think we found the problem. I change out the injectors last night went for a drive, parked it and hour later she fired up on 2 cranks.

Still want to do a couple more test runs but I thinks its fixed. Also hooked up the computer make sure no codes.

Seems to run good with the 1997 injectors.

Should I get the 1992 cleaned or new ones are $130each from the dealer.

thanks everyone that chimed in. I will let you know final diagnoses.

I been driving it this weekend and its fires right up after 2-3 cranks everytime, after sitting for a 10 minutes or hour. Thanks for all the help figureing this one out and learned something about injectors.

Now should I get the orginal ones cleaned or buy new ones from dealer?

Awesome! Glad to hear it's fixed.

If it's running fine now why get the originals cleaned? The mid-90's and up Subaru injectors are much more reliable in my experience and even if one of those fails... just buy another junkyard set and throw them in.

Are the injectors identical in color (red)? As long as the injectors are identical just keep the 97's in.
