Has anyone tried swapping in a JDM instrument cluster?

Headlights to tailights and everything in between.

Has anyone tried swapping in a JDM instrument cluster?

Post by totech »

As above, the JDM market has some different instrument clusters, and apart from the speedo and the tach being swapped.

I am in canada so the kilometre speedo is good.

So, Will it work?

Should I try?

Any feedback is appreciated

Shouldn't be a problem. But I know some Legacy's had electronic speedometers, while others had cable. Electronic ones wouldn't work. JDM RS RPM guages have a 7500 RPM redline :D I want to get ahold of one of those.

"Electronic ones wouldn't work"

Are you sure? To change a transmission over from mechanical to speedo is really simple. You just unscrew the cable mount and screw a sender back in.

I dont know what else is needed but Id love to get rid of the cable.

You are better off swapping for an early japan built cluster. Color changing gear indicators, sun roof open indicator, better temperature gauge "font" and so on.

Is that something unique or am I mis-reading you? Cuz that's what I got on mine.

Just wondering

If you have an early car that was built in Japan you should have these. The issue is many of the later cars where built in the US and lost alot. Let me guess you both have little white dots on your vent controls to show which way they are pointing.

Having owned/worked on many legacy I notice alot of differences. The only GOOD thing I saw with the Later built american built units is that the Wagons got black plastic speaker buckets in the rear, compared to the early japanese which had white plastic ones that crack at the mounting stud.

Weird. I have a 11/89 Japan wagon and I've got the black buckets.

Ah I see. And I just ran outside in the cold cuz now I had to know whether I had those white dots on the vents :P (I do).

I work as a lot guy at a Chrysler dealership, and a new word I learned recently was "de-contenting". It seems that as a model ages, manufacturers start removing "redundant" stuff from the vehicles. This includes stuff like insulation and features like the "white dots". The new Grand Cherokees are so bad that you can actually see light through the sunvisors. I guesss that's one advantage of owning an early production model.

Yes, :D , however mine only indicates when the sunroof is in the "vent" position, not completely open. It's located in the same diagram that shows you which door is open etc.

Yeah they do. The only thing I don't got that you guys got is the sunroof indicator. I have the high beams and doors. My dad's old 79 GL had the door lights also. Identical to ours now. His also had the same high beams, and it even made the driveline and th wheels brown when 4wd was engaged. It turned off when it was in fwd. I always thought that was cool. Remember, that was back in 79.

If I fail my motorcycle permit test, I'll probably be calling you tomarrow morning to go cruise. If I pass, I may be going on a cruise with my grandfather. We'll see.
