switching the charge read wire
i read online and talked to a alternator rebuild guy about upping the voltage for short periods of time. he said to put a switch on the charge read wire. the Fat white wire in the plug. but he didnt say what kind of switch. could i use a heavy duty on off switch?

Re: switching the charge read wire
Im not advocating you do this, but you'd need a switch rated for the amperage you are going to run temporarily.

Re: switching the charge read wire
Sounds sketchy to be honest. Lol but i'm with Mike.
the guy who had the really low winestone SS on the corvette wheels
Re: switching the charge read wire
he said it interrupts the reading so it lets the alt charge at a higher voltage
Re: switching the charge read wire
Why are you wanting to do this?

Re: switching the charge read wire
makes sense but i'd figure there would be some sort of external controller you can buy and wire in-between that can give you a specific voltage.

Re: switching the charge read wire
i wish there was. but the shop guy said to put a switch on the wire that tells the alt to kick on, is suppose to fool the alt to make it think the battery needs some extra voltage
Re: switching the charge read wire
You likely need to hook up to the sense pin. These diagrams below should help

Re: switching the charge read wire
so looking at this. i need to tap into the white thick wire. well on my subie the sense it the white 12 gauge ish wire
Re: switching the charge read wire
You are correct, I was wrong earlier.
This diagram also confirms and shows it's pin 2.

so would a heavy duty on off switch work?

Re: switching the charge read wire
Based on what you've said, the switch would be simply interrupting a low voltage signal wire. Therefore, you don't need a super heavy duty switch. Might be a good idea to use one anyways because in theory they are better built.
I think that this idea is going to chew through alternator however, but I am curious to hear the results.

Re: switching the charge read wire
its only gonna be switched off so to speak during stereo comps other wise it will be left on for daily
Re: switching the charge read wire
Did you mean to say it's only going to be switched "on" for stereo comps and left "off" for daily?turbo970 wrote:its only gonna be switched off so to speak during stereo comps other wise it will be left on for daily

Re: switching the charge read wire
yea my bad lol i was thinking in my head when switch is on the alt would do normal charge and switched off it will do the boosted charge
Re: switching the charge read wire
well i put a switch in and a relay charge goes up but the dash light kicks on.
Re: switching the charge read wire
What does the voltage go up to?

Re: switching the charge read wire
14.4 14.5. i put a diode in and it floats between 13.6 and 14.2. i need to find out if i put a second one in if it will steady things
