TD05-16G Failure... what next?

Hello there!

So, I have swapped my EJ22T with a JDM EJ20G, which came with the TD05-16G. Long story short, my TD05 had some "issues" shortly after getting the swap running again, as you'll see in the photos below.. I'll admit that they were caused, most likely, by my own negligence, but that doesn't matter in the end.

Right now I'm running the stock VF11, and to be completely honest... I think I like the response a little more, anyway.

That's beside the point. Below are photos of the "issue" I had with the TD05.



Those of you with a keen eye will be able to see what caused the failure. My question is, what should I do with this? I'd like to put it back in just for solidarity (and fun), but I don't know if it would be cheaper just to find an alternative, or whether I can replace the internals at all.

What does legacycentral think?

I know some are still floating out there, good used for a couple hundred. But I've also here u can get rebuild kits for them. I picked up a good spare/the one I'm using for 200 a year or so ago, I still the 05 that came on my 20g but I haven't looked to see if it's even any good. Google knows all, a quick search brings up rebuild kits

I've got one that came with my swapped engine I would sell you. I'd have to go down to the shop and grab it.

whoa. At least it wasn't of a more catastrophic failure.

What is your budget like? The rebuild kit would be a good option if you feel like taking on tearing a turbo apart. It is easier and faster then it looks if you have a big enough hammer to separate the 2 halves. Assuming the housings are not more damaged on the inside that would prevent you from reusing it.

If you like the quicker spooling you could get a TD04 for pretty cheap just about anywhere. That would be pretty close to the middle between the vf11 and the TD05.

FWIW I tried rebuilding the VF11 and it turned out to not be worth it. With as fast as these things spin everything needs to be properly balanced and once you take them apart they should be checked IMO. By the time you do that you could have gotten a good used one.

Very true. Perhaps I'll just donate this one to the "learn how to take things apart" pile. It's a shame this happened, but in the end, I'm convinced it was entirely my fault. FWIW, this turbo made a solid 70 mile trip after it started acting funny. I was on the way to a family gathering when it happened, and had to make the trip back afterward. It still made boost, but only barely, and made a metallic whining noise.

There is a place here south of Seattle that I took my TD05 for a complete rebuild that included hotside coating. I think it was $400 after tax.
