Engine information- EJ20

Post by Ktlincoln »

So I'm pretty sure the built EJ22T in my car is toast, and I'm looking for a decent motor to stick in for a replacement.
I will most likely be doing a megasquirt along with the motor, so ECU doesn't really matter.

Can anybody tell me more about this motor? From the info I can find the mid 90s EJ20 should have a 90' off the turbo. This is a straight shot off the turbo under the intake manigfold. , DOHC. Im having trouble finding specs and info about it.

Thanks

This is an ej20k. Or a forester 'ej20g' that is ej20k in every way except the name.

And the 9:1 compression, smaller injectors, td04 turbo, and smaller maf.

Does anybody know if the car harness (Early 90's Legacy SS) will plug into an ECU that would work with this engine?

I thought the "g" motors and "k" motors had different heads Mike??? My harness plugged into the new ECU, except for the couple pins for the ignition converter

They are different. But interchangable.

Find a EJ20G if you can. They are 100% plug and play with the EJ22T harness. I did have to cut and extend my IACV plug though, since it's on the opposite side, but it didn't take much work to do that.

Let's get this out there: there's 3 cars the EJ20G was offered in. The Legacy, Impreza's, and Forester. The former two are largely compatible with each other and our stock ECU plugs, and all the plugs on the engine sensors are the same, and have the 90* Turbo inlets. The Forester version is a later engine with the modern-style intake and uses a 3 plug ECU and not all of the sensors are compatible, but can be made to work if you swap some stuff around.

Importers are notorious for not knowing anything about the engine besides "EJ20 turbo" or even worse, using the wrong manufacturer's engine code suffix (look up EJ20DETT on eBay). I'm not per se recommending a particular engine, I'm just saying know what you're looking for because all EJ20G's are not equal and don't trust the importers to tell you its the right thing.

The late ej20g was used in the 97/98 built Forester and wrx wagons, as I mentioned before they were 9:1 compression, grey top 440s, and a td04 turbo similar to the usdm ej205 wrx turbo. You'll have to keep the compression ratio in mind when tuning. The 93-96 ej20g would be a better choice for the 1st gen legacy since they use the same throttle body and tps with the idle switch built in. Swapping that to the late 20g/20k manifold is a challenge for a couple reasons, but it has been done. All use the same 6/7 trigger pattern for the cam and crank position sensors, and iacv function is electronically identical. The benefits of the late 20g are a solid shim over bucket lifter design as opposed to the early impreza 20g hla buckets so higher rpm can be achieved. The intake manifold is a long runner design so low end is generally better, my 205/25d hybrid with the 20k manifold has better low end torque than my 10:1 compression dohc ej22.

If you decide to go the megasquirt route why not just buy a used ej205 from an 02-05?

I honestly have no idea what direction to go at the moment. Thinking maybe a 93-96 jdm ej20g and rob tune. Car is not top priority but am itching to get it back on the road.

Car was currently set up with revtronix, td04, top mount, etc. Ran great, sat for a year on a stand (cold garage) and is now somehow pressurizing the oil and mixing....

If you aren't going to do the megasquirt immediately the 93-96 impreza 20g is your best option, you really don't 'need' the robtune to just get it up and running again. A stock 20g ecu will run it perfectly fine.

Revtronix sucks compared to the RobTune (personal op) But like Bratman said, a stock 20G ecu will be fine to get it running.
