Roof Rails on a Wagon

I've done a search and have found nothing that helped. I know they came stock on a few of the legacies, is it possible to install them on my wagon that didnt come stock with them?

If so, how hard is it to do so?

I've seen a few wagons running around with aftermarket racks that clip onto the sides where the black always peels off, and i dont particularly like the look of them. I need a ski/board rack, but would REALLY prefer factory rails.

I'd recommend a junk yard as good clip-on racks are expensive (I still just tie my kayak down on foam blocks and drive like an old lady as I'm too cheap). I imagine there's little covers on the rack that you'll have to pop off to expose screws. Otherwise rip the headliner down and maybe there's something under there. Most wagons I see have the racks.

I've got factory rails on mine but having seen some without I can't see what you'd fit them to. Are there hidden holes in the roof or something?

I think you have to drill holes in the roof.

You shouldn't have a leak problem as I'm sure there are gaskets. The old ones had them as I've removed them.

The stock rails arent so great. Just find some used ski racks and modify those. You dont have to drill holes either.

I got some used yakima that the owner lost the key too. I threw away all the ski stuff and was left with two strong cross bars. Attached side bars to that using plumbing/fencing supply and created a super strong rack for my friends legacy.

I dont like what aftermarket roof racks look like attached to the sides of the wagons. Thats the whole point of the stock roof rails

Dont you plan to put stuff on top? If so why do you care how it looks? With the rails I mentioned they can be removed when not needed.

I wouldnt get a roof rack to look pretty. I do not mind what they look like, and will use it for skis and snowboards. If it's stock roof rails, then I dont mind if they stay on, thats the point. saves me the work of removing them everytime i get home from the mountains

Just because something is fuctional, does not mean that it has to be unattractive. This may be the girl in me coming out, but I'd prefer something on my car which i dont dislike the sight of.

You could alwas paint the roof racks

I honestly dont care what my car looks like as long as it is clean and straight, doesnt attract attention. Im a big fan of leaving everything stock and debadging. Im against tint only because you can tell its been added afterwards (drawing attention).
When your adding something functional its performance should be considered before its asthetics. You want the stock rails which are weak and could cause leaks instead of aftermarket rails that are strong and require no modification to the vehicle.

BTW, why cant you fold one side of the rear seat down and store the items inside?

Or better yet you could sit on one of theirs

You should try to get rails from a later legacy car that have the better sliding cross bars.

will roof rails from a newer legacy fit? My roof seems to be hollow. That's why i'd imagine the stock rails from a different gen would not bolt to whatever it is the roof rails bolt to.

Check the storage space of the Scion Xb in person. You will be surprised. Im probably going to buy one in the next couple of years, especially with an all the aftermarket support (factory turbo kit will even be available).
