well, technically I'm "no-pipe" right now. I went to a local garage day with the new england impreza guys. I took my legacy and was going to do a straight pipe swap. After I unbolted the muffler I went for a ride to see how it sounded. Besides setting off a car alarm, it was surprisingly quiet. It had the "subaru" sound. not obnoxiously loud at all. very mild for an open exhaust. even at WOT it just had that nice WRX sound to it.
I got back and went up to the auto parts place near where everyone was working on their cars, and it had closed 20 minutes ago. so I'm riding around with no muffler for now .
I might be crazy, but I think my high end actually benefitted. I was doing this just for the sound, but I think I may have actually gotten some gains . any other straight pipe guys see any improvement?

removing the cat in the downpipe was an incredible improvement !
i'm now 3" down to after the resonator, and then 2.5" to the muffler, muffler straight 2.5"... straight pipe all the way.
One night a COP arrested me for drifting in parking lots (usualy that doesn't botter them, but that one was a young and fresh and "tete enflée" ..) he asked me to do a routine check of my car, and asked that I press the accellerator while in neutral to check my exaust... and noticed NOTHING at all !! Pouahahaha
the car is a bit more loud when hot, but not that much it's surprising how quiet it still is, and that's what i wanted (dont want to have cops chasing me all the time)
i would expect a gain in high end when not runnin a muffler... but i would also expect to lose some low end... i think thats the general consensus on the matter
I also just got a 2.5" straight pipe after the dp, best 80$ I ever spent. I can't believe how good it sounds, plus its a bit quicker, I'd reccomend this to anyone....

I finally fitted the actual pipe onto the back. so it's stock to the axle, then it's 2 lengths of flexi-pipe and a 14" or so straight pipe. and that's it . It sounds so yummy. quieter than most fart cans, and without the nasty fart noise !!! this thing sounds so good. I'm thinking of sawzall'ing out one of my cats next. just because.

You should hear mine with no cats and a 3" dynomax muffler, it's heaven. I've had nothing but compliments on the sound, even a DSM owner wants his to sounds just like mine.
It's too bad you have an auto, at about 3300rpms in any gear when coasting down there's this really great, loud rasp that makes people look
I really want to either go to a shop and ask for a straight pope from the DP back. or chop out the cats and resonator (we have a resonator, right?) and just replace them with a few sections of pipe. a dremel, a sawzall, and some random pipe will do wonders. It sounds great right now, but I'd liek my high end to be a little lower pitched. I just LOVE the "worble" it makes especially around the low end. it's like a mixture of high and low tones. it's like aural art.

I know exactly what you mean . . . I can't imagine how my car would sound without a muffler!!
Is it true that with straight pipes sometimes when enough unburnt fuel hits the cat it will reignite and a flame will come out of the tailpipe? Cuz if straight pipes and one cat mean i can occasionally have fire come out of my pipes I'm all for it!
If not... what kind of exhaust set-up will let flames occasionaly shoot out? (Without the whole spark plug in the tail pipe crap)
shooting flames is a fun N/A or blown car trick, but it's bad for turbo. read the article that was posted just above here and read how long exhaust manifolds last with anti-lg fitted . the turbo wheel is plenty hot enough to light unburnt fuel and make that "popcorn" sound when you drop the hammer. Although, since I've gone straight-pipe (well, straight with 2 cats ) any time that I've had a backfire, it sounds just like an anti-lag bang . very cool indeed. all the same I try to keep it from happening too often.

I am aware of what Anti-Lag Systems are (and why no manufacturer would dare put them on a street car), and I don't want my car backfiring. I was just checking into any magical flames that would appear after straight-pipe installation. I heard somewhere about the unburnt fuel hitting the cat, but it may have been more internet junk that is untrue.
well, if you get a catless straight-pipe, replace the stock bypass valve with a atmospheric bov and add a fuel pump + some more boost, then you might be able to shoot flames out the exhaust. it will happen in a really rich condition.
FLAMEs my turbos got it & a crazy back fire sound that scares pepole. when u guys talk about straight pipe there is nothing wright cuz my car has a 5' downpipe to 3' pipe wit a tip no muffs no cats it sounds like a big block and back fires. it like the rally cars u hear on tv that werid sound when they hit corners.
