HELP!!!! My engine has stopped

Post by mark-b »

I have a BD5 twin turbo and I did the unthinkable and over filled the engine oil by about half a liter (no excuse is good enough for this sad treatment). I travelled about 300kms then it sounded like I was running on 3 cylinders then I crawled to a stop. It didnt over heat. I drained off the excess oil and still nothing. It will turn over but not fire up. Does anyone know if the over filling of oil could cause this problem? Is it as simple as changing some very messed up spark plugs???

That's what I would do, it's possible that the excess oil could have caused some carbon deposits to bridge the gap on the spark plug, resulting in a non-firing plug and a dead cylinder.

However, I'm not sure if only half a liter of excess oil would be that detrimental. I work at a Toyota dealership where I've seen the mistake of people filling the engine until it started spewing out of the valve cover!! The car smoked a whole bunch, but otherwise ran okay...

I don't think the extra oil is the issue unless you put in an extra gallon or so. You could pull the plugs and check them, but the extra oil shouldn't be the culprit. How old are the filters and wires? Usually fouled plugs will sputter and stumble on all cylinders, losing power before finally crapping out unless there were a problem with an individual cylinder, which I doubt. Usually the problem is the most minor with these cars.

Overfilling to the point of damage is usually caused by lack of lubrication, so if your engine is still spinning you probably got away with at worst some leaks.

Hi guys. Thanks for the feedback. You fellas are right in saying that you need a heap of oil to do some damage. I have since found out it was some nasty little deposits in the gas tank that wrecked the gas pump. now Im going places alot faster with less foot on the gas pedal.
