Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
Ive been searching for quite some time now and cannot get a definite answer on what Head Gaskets to use when I throw my Ver 2 JDM Ej20g heads on my 22t shortblock. My buddy is telling me to use ej205 gaskets, where as people on here are saying to use the OEM 22t gaskets but those will drop the cc to low.. Could somebody please give me a for sure answer on this? Thank you in advance
Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
You have to use headgaskets that match the bore of the engine, so 2.2L.
You have several thickness choices, but you'll need to use the 1.3mm gaskets to avoid the 22T pistons coming up and hitting the heads. 22T pistons are proud of the block at TDC.
Yes, CR will be low. No way around it without aftermarket pistons or different heads.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
Thank you for the reply, alphius. Cometic makes a head gasket for the 22t that's .051 operating thickness. Will these work to for my case? I know that oem gaskets are .059 but I would like to get the shortest gasket that won't make piston to valve contact. Or is that just simply not an option?
Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
.051" is 1.3mm which should be what the stock 22T gasket compresses to.
I've used 0.8mm gaskets and had significant piston to head contact, so I'd go for at least a 1mm or .040" compressed thickness, and even that is cutting it a little close for comfort. The rule in the domestic V8 world that I learned early on is that .025-.030" quench distance is about as low as you want to go to account for rod stretch and piston rock. If you consider that 0.8mm/.031" leads to contact, then even the .051"/1.3mm gaskets are as thin as I'd be remotely comfortable with.

I have a set of .040" and I'm afraid to use them. .051" is what I would go with.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
Okay, thank you for the clarification you guys. I also have the ability to get some ej20k heads. If I get those, can I use the same 0.51 cometic gasket or would I need to get one that's bigger?

One comment about Cometics that I've heard from many people. They don't tolerate crappy mating surfaces on the block or head side. Much more so than OEM.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
In that case it should be a superior head gasket!

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
I thought maybe cosworth or JE would have one, but it seems the only other 2.2 gasket option I can come up with is roger clark. $$$ and need to come from england. Although I think the exchange rate is pretty favorable right now...

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
At this point im just thinking about using oem 22t gaskets and dealing with the low cc. I'll be putting the 550 robtune and upping the boost to around 20psi. thoughts?

First off I'll start with a disclaimer:
Every car is different. Every part is different and there are differences installation processes of parts.
My old dohc 22t I ran a vf39 with cometic gaskets and an fcd at 18 psi and that lasted quite some time and it was fun.

Rob has a EJ22T+DOHC tune. Let him know your setup and he can help w/that low(er) CR.
and as noted, 20PSI depends on the turbo, but anything bigger than a TD05-16G may max out the MAF.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
A 16G at 17psi maxes out the MAF with a RobTune.
It'd probably max out the metal MAF with a FCD at like 14psi or less.
Low CR isn't the end of the world. It'll be fine.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
I currently have a td05 and an awic and the 440 tune.
Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
VF39 and TD05 are very similar. Both will max out a set of 550s and a plastic JECS/Autecs MAF at similar boost/airflow levels.cj91legss wrote:What about a vf39 at 18psi?

So with this being said are you talking about 22t pistons or are you talking about an upgraded piston? The reason I'm asking is because I'm getting Wiesco pistons for the block that also came out of a 22t block but was running stock usdm heads. I don't have the heads in hand but the dishing does look a little different.

Off-the-shelf Wiseco pistons are also proud of the deck. They do increase CR by a half point in a stock engine though, so that's nice. You still need to use the thick 22T head gasket.

Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
So I'm looking at an mls gasket from Cometic .50" with is a little more then a millimeter. Do you think that will be sufficient clearance and good cr? Many have stayed stay away from the stock hg with the 20g heads.Alphius wrote:Off-the-shelf Wiseco pistons are also proud of the deck. Re: Ej22t/Eg20g hybrid headgaskets??
Almost everyone is choosing the .051" cometic gaskets.
However you can use oem, I did on one of my dohc builds.
