I was wondering what other AT transmissions can I swap into my 91 tleg. My auto has something broke inside and looking for a cheap fix for right now. It's already an auto just looking for another auto to throw in without any modifications to get it driving again.

Automatic transmission swap to another automatic question

Re: Automatic transmission swap to another automatic questio
Electronics wise I think you can use any other phase 1 4EAT. There were slight changes throughout the years, but I believe the electronics work as long as you stay with correct "phase". The phase 1 4EAT is designated by the same electrical connectors. The phase 2 4EAT has one different electrical connector.

Re: Automatic transmission swap to another automatic questio
-Thanks for your reply. Is there certain years to choose from? Or a code to look for? How to decipher between p1 and p2?

Re: Automatic transmission swap to another automatic questio
I've heard that the phase 1 transmission is used up until mid to late 90's.
You can verify which is which by the electrical plug and the post I linked to above.

Re: Automatic transmission swap to another automatic questio
Hey Joe,
I actually just did a 4EAT replacement on my 93 for the same reason, this thread on NASIOC helped me out with finding the correct tranny to swap in, maybe it can help you as well!

Re: Automatic transmission swap to another automatic questio
HI,
'90-'98 are Phase 1 for all Subarus for transmission purposes.
All EJ22e '90-'91 and '95-'98 are 4.11 FD ratio.
All EJ22e '92-'94 and EJ22T '91 (only year VLSD)-'94 Sport Sedan / Touring Wagon are 3.90
EJ25D Outback, LSi, GT, Forester, Impreza RS-'96-'98 are 4.44. (None are VLSD - incl. the Foz S and RS )
EJ18 '93-'97 Impreza should be 4.11 per Opposedforces.com
EG33 SVX are 3.545 (VLSD) - reported to be same as SS/TW trans except for FD ratio.
You can use the same TCU/TCM that came w/the car or swap in one that matches the trans, from what I've read, BUT Legacy and Impreza (@ least) use different mounts and plug connectors depending on year, AFAIK.
And if you swap the rear diff, note that the pinion flange bolt pattern changed around '95, you'll need to get a matching driveshaft / driveline to bolt up or swap pinion flange (real PITA to remove).
